Boholanos from around the world have gathered in full strength in the province to savor all the exciting events and festivities prepared by the city and provincial government with an international group of Boholano expats, led by New York-based nurse Betty Veloso-Garcia. This reunion of Boholanos is called Tigum Bol-Anon sa Tibuok Kalibutan(TBTK) and comes only once every three years. This year’s TBTK included an audience with President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo, who will fly in Tagbilaran on Wednesday, July 22, 2009 to join “Bohol Day”. The rest of the activities include local and international job fairs, medical missions, mass confirmations, beauty contests, reunions of families, clans and institutions, eco-tours and cultural happenings under the “Sandugo Festival.” This year’s theme, “Green Bohol,” expresses their deep appreciation for the rich natural bounties the province has been blessed amid the threats posed by climate change.
Meanwhile, a nationally known newspaper journalist confessed that as a confirmed city mouse, as she called Tagbilaran, she has been in awe not only of the beauty of the province that has been blessed by nature but also about how, in the last three TBTK, the Boholanos have demonstrated an incredible solidarity as the reunion becomes bigger and bigger. The writer said she cannot think of any other province exhibiting this kind of bonding between local and foreign-based folks.

Makati City Mayor Jejomar Binay is aiming to become the next president of the country.
With his 23-year track record as the chief steward of the country’s premier business city, he holds the ace of drawing the “right formula” to propel this country to greater heights.
Binay arrived Thursday and drove around the province on board his “Binay Mobile”
In an interview, Binay stressed the importance of empowering the local government units. He cited that the national government is controlling 82% of the country’s budgetary allocation while only 18% is left for the LGUs. “Handa Para sa Bansa”, as his battle cry, the 66-year old mayor is delivering the message that it is prime time for him to do what he has done in Makati to the entire nation.
The following day, Binay motored to the municipalities of San Miguel, Carmen and Baclayon where Makati City had a sisterhood pact signed by Mayor Claudio Bonior, Mayor Boy Molina and Mayor Alvin Uy, respectively. He also inked the same sisterhood pact with the city of Tagbilaran with Mayor Dan Lim.
The Makati mayor has become a legend for his long running leadership of Makati after he introduced his branded health and education programs and his special concern for the senior citizens.

At the Pope Pius XII Catholic Center, two Boholanos were elected top officials of the Catholic Bishops Conference of the Philippines (CBCP). They are: Zamboanga Archbishop Romulo Valles of Maribojoc town, and Sorsogon Bishop Arturo Bastes, born in Loboc town. Valles sits for Mindanao while Bastes is for Luzon.
Tagbilaran Bishop Leonardo Medroso was also elected as permanent council members for the Visayas. Also newly elected CBCP President, Tandag, Surigao del Sur Bishop Nereo Odchimar claims his roots hail from Guindulman, Bohol.

Since last week, Boholano balikbayans have been arriving from all over the world to take part in the 2009 Tigum Bol-anon sa Tibook Kalibutan (TBTK) which officially reeled off last Tuesday.
Pres. Gloria Macapagal Arroyo herself welcomed the balikbayans by opening the doors of Malacanang to a guided tour. TBTK President Betty Veloso Garcia and Genaro Lapez, president of the Boholano Association of Metro Manila, Inc (BAMMI) led the Boholanos during the Palace tour escorted by Rep. Edgar Chatto, chairman of the House committee on tourism.
As balikbayans started to trickle in, registrations started at the Metro Centre Hotel, this city with a full staff of TBTK secretariat.

Department of Education Secretary Jesli Lapus instructed school officials nationwide to send 2.2 million children with disabilities to school. This is part for the DepEd’s “Education For All” program to become a reality.
DepEd has incorporated in its School Improvement Plan (SIP) a comprehensive education system that includes children with special needs. It has components on child find, assessment, program options, curriculum modification and parental involvement.
Under the system, children with special needs are located through the family mapping survey, advocacy campaigns and networking with local health workers. These children are then visited by Special Education (SPED) teachers to convince the parents to enroll their children in SPED Centers or the nearest school.
An important feature of the program is the provision of support services from professionals and specialists, parents, volunteers, and peers to children with special needs. (PIA)
