COMELEC reminds new qualified voters to register for 2010.

Deadline of registration for voters to vote in the 2010 elections is fast approaching. The Commission on Elections (Comelec) reminds those qualified to vote in the coming elections to register before the deadline to avoid the rush. According to the Commission on Elections (Comelec), those who want to register must be: • At least 18 years of age on or before election day. • Has resided in the Philippines for at least one year and in the place wherein he proposes to vote, for at least six months immediately preceding the election. • Is not otherwise disqualified by law, such as any person who has been sentenced by final judgment to suffer imprisonment of not less than one year; any person adjudged by final judgment of having committed crimes such as rebellion, sedition, violation of the firearms laws and against national security; insane or incompetent person as declared by competent authority. Those who were de-listed—voters who were not able to vote in the last two national elections on 2007 and 2004—are urged to re-register at the local Comelec offices.
Those qualified to vote may register at the Office of the Election Officer in the district/city/municipality where they reside until Oct. 31. Comelec offices will accept applications during office hours (8 a.m. to 5 p.m.) from Monday to Saturday (even on holidays).
Filipino citizens who intend to vote abroad may register until Aug. 31 so long as they are at least 18 years old on the day of the elections and are not otherwise disqualified by law.

POEA-7 registers increase in deployment of workers abroad for 1st semester’09

Philippine Overseas Employment Agency (POEA-7) records revealed that there are 15,702 employment contracts that have been processed from January to June, this year.

POEA-7 Legal Officer Atty. Imelda Lerida bared these over 15T people are the new batch of overseas Filipino workers (OFWs), being their first time to work beyond our shores, that will be helping the country’s national economy through their dollar remittances.

Lerida said their agency also processed 14,064 returning OFWs under their ‘Balik Manggagawa’ Program in the first six months this year.

In-demand jobs abroad are skilled workers such as construction workers and welders, medical professionals such as nurses, caregivers and domestic helpers. (PIA/FCR)

DOH: AH1N1 vaccine possibly available in October

The A(H1N1) flu vaccine might be available in the market by October this year. This is according to Dr. Eric Tayag, chief epidemiologist of the Department of Health (DOH).

While the vaccine is still being developed in Australia and the United Kingdom, the DOH is reminding the public to continue practicing the following health tips:

  • to keep your three feet distance
  • wash your hands regularly
  • cover your mouth when coughing
  • stay at home if not feeling well

He warned also the public that the high risk individuals – such as people with respiratory problems, of old age, and pregnant women – should be more extra careful so as to avoid infection. (PIA)

Farm and fishery sector, no. 1 job creator in RP

The farm and fishery sector was able to generate half a million jobs from this year, making it the top job generator for the first quarter of 2009. This is according to Governor Joey Salceda (Albay), the Presidential Economic Adviser.

Based on data of the Bureau of Labor and Employment Statistics, employment in the farm and fisheries sector as of April 2009 was estimated at 12.318 million, which is higher compared to 11.905 million for the same period last year.

The government has also increased spending for agriculture, focusing on irrigation and other rural infrastructure. The National Irrigation Administration (NIA) has also fast tracked rehabilitation and restoration work of irrigation system.

The administration of President Arroyo has increased spending on agriculture, P25.36 billion in 2007, P35.39 billion in 2008 and P46.86 billion this year.

From 2001, the start of the Arroyo presidency, to the present, the government was able to generate a total of 8.95 million jobs in the private sector and at least 12 million jobs were created through government projects, according to the Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE). (PIA)

PGMA: Bring home remains of 10 OFWs immediately

“Bring home immediately the remains of 10 Filipino workers killed in a helicopter crash in Afghanistan,” President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo ordered the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA).

“The DFA intends to match the DNA samples of the 10 Filipino workers with those in the possession of their employers. Once the identities of the victims, are confirmed, they will be transported to Kuwait and repatriated back to Manila.” These were the statements disclosed by Foreign Affairs Undersecretary Esteban Conejos, Jr.

After all the assistance are given to the families of the victims, Conejos said the Department of Labor and Employment, DFA, Philippine Overseas Employment Administration and the Overseas Workers Welfare Administration will sit down to investigate and find out how these OFWs were able to get to Afghanistan despite the existing travel ban.

Conejos said that aside from Afghanistan, there is an existing deployment ban on four other countries namely Iraq, Nigeria, Jordan and Lebanon. (PIA)
