Norway scholarship program to benefit 5,000 Pinoy seafarers

The government of Norway has granted cadet scholarships to at least 5,000 Filipino seafarers,Trade Secretary Peter Favila revealed.

According to Favila, the Filipino seafarers will be trained as future officers in the world-pioneering Norwegian merchant fleet.

The over six-year Norwegian Scholarship Program will be at the University of Cebu, which was chosen by the Norwegian Shipowner’s Association (NSA) as a partner institution in the NSA Philippines Cadet Project.

Norwegian government just recently granted to their Norwegian shippers’ association a scholarship in tie-up with the University of Cebu of more than 1,000 scholarships annually for the next five years,” Favila added.

At present, there are about 25,000 Filipino seafarers manning Norwegian vessels alone, he said further. (PIA/Bohol)
