NFA ups rice buy plan to 1 million MT in ’09

The National Food Authority (NFA) is planning to buy 1 million metric tons (MT) of palay from local producers this year. This is 45% higher than last years’ procurement and sums up to P11.645 billion, according to NFA Administrator Jessup Navarro.

Navarro said last year’s procurement volume was in fact 2,000% higher than the previous year’s volume buy of 33,000 MT.

AT a recent Department of Agriculture Management Committee meeting, Navarro told DA Secretary Arthur Yap that NFA’s buying policy now prioritizes farmers shifting from inbred to certified seeds and to those switching from certified seeds to hybrid seeds. (rachiu/PIA)
