Filipino Efren Penaflorida, has been recognized as one of the “2009 Top 10 CNN Heroes” by the CNN Blue Ribbon Panel, a search for unheralded heroes, people driver to exceptional achievement in service to others.
A teacher and social worker, Efren “Kuya Ef” Peñaflorida, Jr. is acknowledged for his outstanding advocacy to educate Filipino out-of-school youth through “pushcart classes.” At sixteen, he recruited three fellow high school students to teach children in the slum areas every Saturday and initiated Dynamic Teen Company (DTC) to help provide free tutorials to underserved Filipino youth. Today, DTC’s “pushcart classroom” also teaches basic reading and writing to street children.
