APEC member-economies welcome offer of Philippines to host APEC Summit in 2015

THE member-economies of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) welcomed the offer of the Philippines to host the APEC summit in 2015.

The announcement of the Philippines hosting the APEC in 2015 was contained in the joint declaration issued by the 21 APEC leaders, including President Benigno S. Aquino III, at the conclusion of the APEC leaders’ Meeting with the theme of “Integrate to Grow, Innovate to Prosper” held here at the Far Eastern Federal University on Russkiy Island.

The country will be hosting the APEC 2015 after Indonesia and China.

“We welcome the offer of the People’s Republic of China, the Philippines and Peru to host APEC in 2014, 2015 and 2016 respectively,” the declaration stated.

“We welcome the invitation from the President of Indonesia to meet again in Bali in 2013,” it added.

Also in the joint declaration, the APEC leaders believed that the work that has been done in APEC in 2012 to build a more integrated society and ensure innovation-based economic growth “will contribute to our common goal of achieving prosperity for APEC economies.”

They also support the increasing engagement of the APEC Business Advisory Council which contributes significantly to greater collaboration between the public and private sectors.

“We remain fully committed to facilitate the role of APEC’s business community and to provide more opportunities for its participation in APEC’s work,” the APEC leaders said.

They also reaffirmed their commitment to provide effective economic and technical cooperation activities outlined in the Osaka Action Agenda and to assist APEC members in accordance with the Manila Framework.

The APEC leaders will also continue to take necessary and concrete actions to mitigate negative effects, build resilience of APEC economies and reach new heights in the development of the region. (PCOO/I-ed)

RAFI Micro-finance gives back to Bohol clients



“Power is in the business that improves lives, including that of all the people in the Philippines, but success will not be acquired overnight but needs constant diligence,” Ma. Theresa G. Catipay, executive director of the Ramon Aboitiz Foundation Inc. (RAFI) Micro-finance, said in her message during the second general assembly of Bohol Area on August 18 at the Bohol Wisdom School Gymnasium, Tagbilaran City, Bohol.

With the theme, “Kakugi, Binhi sa Kaugmaon”, the event drew 1,081 women micro-entrepreneurs from Tagbilaran, Talibon, Tubigon, and Ubay branch of operations. The nanays actively participated in the various activities.

Top performing clients in various categories such as the Most Outstanding Client, Most Outstanding Chairwoman, Most Improved Group and Client, and Conscientious Saver were recognized and were given cash prizes. The group with the most artistic banner was also awarded.

The Most Outstanding Client award was given to Claudia C. Celis from Inabanga, Bohol.

The general assembly is conducted once every three years in the area to honor RAFI Micro-finance clients who remained loyal to the program for five years or more and to acknowledge model women micro-entrepreneurs.

“No dreams will ever come true unless you wake up and realize them,” Most Outstanding Client from Leyte Zenaida Nuñez, who was gave an inspirational message during the event, said.

Nuñez mentioned knowledge, skills, and attitude as keys to success.

“If you are not skilled in hairstyling and rebonding, do not venture into opening a beauty salon, but instead think of the skills you have and apply it to your business,” she advised fellow clients.

In partnership with Pilmico, the participants were given training on hog raising. The Department of Agriculture (DA) Bohol Experiment Station also shared their expertise in cassava food processing.

Nanays also showcased their talents, and some of their products were displayed in a trade fair.

Children who were around during the event were given art kits through RAFI’s Dolores Aboitiz Children’s Fund (DACF).

PNoy and 20 other world leaders to discuss four priority areas during the APEC Leaders’ Meeting in Vladivostok, Russia

PRESIDENT Benigno S. Aquino III and the other 20 world leaders will meet on Saturday (September 8) for the 20th Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) Leaders’ Meeting to discuss four priority areas for 2012 set by Russia, this year’s country host.

President Aquino and the Philippine delegation will arrive Friday to attend the APEC Leaders’ meeting at the Far Eastern Federal University on Russkiy Island here, the venue for the summit.

The theme of this year’s meeting is “Integrate to Grow, Innovate to Prosper.”

Foreign Affairs Undersecretary for International Economic Relations Laura del Rosario said that the four priorities to be tackled during the APEC Leaders’ Meeting include trade and investment liberalization and regional economic integration.

The three other priority areas that the APEC leaders will also discuss during the meeting are the strengthening food security, establishing reliable supply chains, and cooperation to foster innovative growth.

While in Vladivostok, President Aquino will also participate in the APEC Business Advisory Council (ABAC) Dialogue with APEC leaders, which is a key feature of the APEC Economic Leaders’ Meeting (AELM).

During the ABAC Dialogue, ABAC members are expected to discuss with APEC leaders the entire year’s ABAC work program and to raise issues of pressing concern to the business community.

ABAC Philippines will be represented by A. Magsaysay Inc. President and Chief Executive Officer Doris Magsaysay, Jollibee Food Corp. Chairman and CEO Tony Tan Caktiong, and Ayala Corp. Chairman and CEO Jaime Augusto Zobel de Ayala.

During an interview with Radio Television Malacanang, Undersecretary del Rosario said that the preparations for the hosting of the APEC 2015 by the Philippines will start next year. (PND)
