President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo’s “One Town, One Scholar” program is being implemented now. This program is dedicated for the youth who wanted to enter college but faced with financial problems.
One of the goals of the program is to ensure the college education of at least one bright and deserving but poor high school senior from each of the country’s 1,500 municipalities every year.
Period for application, screening and selection of grantees at the municipal town level is from March 1 to April 15, 2009. (ALA/PIA)

Since January 15, 2009, the National Grid Corporation of the Philippines (NCGP) has officially taken over the nationwide transmission grid operations.
Mr. Walter W. Brown, President and CEO of NCGP, informed that this privately owned corporation, won the competitive public bidding in December of 2007 to operate, manage, and expand the high voltage power grid.
The Philippine Congress then granted NGCP a 50-year franchise, which was signed into law by President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo on December 1, 2008.
NGCP is now the official operator of the franchise formerly held by the government-owned and controlled National Transmission Corporation (TransCo) to operate and maintain the country’s transmission grid. (PIA)

The Institute of Electronics Engineers of the Philippines, Inc.- Bohol Chapter (IECEP-Bohol) will gather together the best ECE students in Bohol to match wits with each other in the 4th ECE Quiz Bowl on March 6, 2009, 1:00 P.M., at The Atrium, Bohol Quality Mall.
Teams from the different colleges and universities of Bohol are expected to take part in this event. Prizes will be given away to the first, second, and third placers. Non-winners will receive consolation prizes courtesy of the sponsors. Lucky spectators will also have the chance to win giveaways during the course of the quiz bowl.

Architect Felino Palafox, of the Palafox and Associates architectural firm, lambasted before a congressional committee investigating the SBMA (Subic Bay Metropolitan Area) row – existence of an alleged Mafia in the area which had victimized many doing business in the area.
Palafox named the unholy alliance members as former Congressman Prospero Pichay, senator Dick Gordon, PAGCOR Chairman Efren Genuino and Congresswoman Cosculella of Zambales and her father.
The famed architect named names despite death threats and a well-financed demolition job against him.

THE Department of Trade and Industry’s Bureau of Product Standards (DTI-BPS) imposes mandatory product certification on protective helmets and their visors for motorcycles. The DTI-BPS mopeds in its effort to phase out substandard helmets in the market and also protect the riders’ and passengers’ safety.
DTI-BPS Director-In-Charge Victorio Mario Dimagiba says that, “Starting 01 April 2009, all manufacturers and importers of protective helmets and their visors are required to secure a Philippine Standard (PS) License or Import Commodity Clearance (ICC) certificate, from the Bureau prior to the sale and distribution of their products.”
Thus, only allowing those protective helmets bearing the PS or ICC mark to be sold in the market by July 2009 and those found with uncertified products shall face administrative charges by the DTI. (DTI/PIA)
