Judges should keep distance from local officials – de la Serna

The Regional Trial Court judges should keep their distance from local officials. This was the statement said by Atty. Victor de la Serna. He adds that the Supreme Court must continue with the policy that the judges will be assigned in other towns and not in their hometowns. A few years ago, this was implemented where Boholano judges were assigned in other towns while judges from other towns were assigned here. But now in this time, it is not implemented. Judges are now assigned in their own hometowns.

Comelec floods with new registered voters

The City Commission on Election (COMELEC) is wondering why they were so many who registered since January 5. This was the observation of Assistant City Comelec Registrar Beatrice Inting. According to Inting, the ones who mostly registered were from the towns of Maribojoc, Cortes, and Antequera who were owners of tricycle operations. It seems that this was one of the requirements for the renewing of business permits. Inting promulgated that from January to December of this year, 30 persons will be entertained in the morning and 50 in the afternoon.

In every coming election, there is an increase of 10% of registered voters.

Race in Attaining the UN Millennium Development Goals by 2015

Six years to go before 2015 when our country pledged to end poverty in the UN assembly in 2000, where members of the UN pledged to meet the Millennium Development Goals. These goals are: to eradicate extreme poverty and hunger, achieve universal primary education, promote gender equality and empower women, reduce child mortality, improve maternal health, combat HIV/AIDS, malaria and other diseases, ensure environmental sustainability and develop a global partnership for development.

Internartional UN agencies such as International Labour Organization, World Health Organization, United Nations Development Fund for Women, etc. have helped in assessing developments of each UN country member.

Reports have shown that Philippines developments in these MDGs are still lagging in three areas which are (1) lagging in the achievement of universal primary education, with about 30 percent of school-age children unable to finish their elementary education; (2) in the struggle to reduce the incidence of HIV/AIDS; and (3) in the improvement of maternal and child mortality.

In an effort to attain all MDGs, the UN Fund for Population (UNFPA) is now working to support local governments in the promotion of maternal and child health, including the provision of family planning services.
