DOH-BFAD warns public on taking “food supplements”

THE public is now warned against taking “food supplements” as alternative cure for ailments.

Belated it may be, the country’s health authorities now insist: these have no curable effects.

Bureau of Food and Drugs (BFAD) of the Department of Health (DOH) issued the warning as the proliferation of food supplements in the market and the bombardment of commercials and testimonies sidle in primetime programs to catch everyone’s attentions as to alleged medical effects of the “supplements”.

In Bohol, food supplements even contract block time slots on local radio stations to market their products, program anchors also put in testimonies unwittingly “proving” that their products bring with them “curative” effect, and even invoke the DOH BFAD permits for their food supplements.

The permits stated are for the food supplements and not for the false claims that the program in general unwittingly project, says a medical practitioner who has asked his patients to stop their “food supplements” because of noted complications.

Stepping in to this to hopefully guide consumers, BFAD advises, these may supplement the body’s nutritional requirements but they have no curative effects.

Moreover, the BFAD, through Director Leticia-Barbara Gutierrez added, there is no proficient medical study and proof that such products can cure or treat a particular ailment or disease.

In DOH-BFAD memorandum 2008-004, Gutierrez went on to advise the public, saying “taking of these food supplements as an alternative for recommended regular medication for an ailment is not the appropriate move and this may result to more serious complications or other ailments.

The DOH-BFAD memorandum dated March 28, 2008 was pushed to take care of health and safety of the consuming public.

Meanwhile, Bohol BFAD chief, Rica Aumentado harps the same line and warns Boholanos against the supplements now peddled in the rural areas.

The Bohol BFAD warning also goes for imported milk and milk based products from China, which ahs been pulled out from the markets due to noted melanine contamination. (rachiu/PIA)

Versoza to continue what Razon started?

BY committing to continuing what his predecessor has started, incoming police chief Jesus Versoza is now “bound” to push for the review and repeal of the controversial law on youthful offenders.

Versoza, who was police deputy director for administration before being appointed to replace Philippine National Police (PNP) Chief Avelino Razon, has been quoted in previous interviews as saying he would continue what the general [Razon] has started.

General Versoza replaces General Razon, who retires at the mandatory age of 56, September 27.

Earlier, Razon, when interviewed by Bohol media openly admitted the PNP and the National police Commission is into a continuing advocacy for review or repeal of the juvenile justice law, “so we could address on the rise of youthful offenders.

He admitted that the police leadership has already made representations in Congress about the law.

“Ginagawa na po,” Razon reminded the media during a press conference in Bohol last week.

As to the integrated police transformation program, which Razon implemented, cops believe it would be no big deal for Versoza who has been an exemplary police administrator.

He is one of the key personnel directly supervising the program that has elevated the sagging image of the country’s police into number 6 best performing government agency, PCSupt Ronaldo Roderos said last week.

Versoza would be installed in simple ceremonies at the PNP headquarters in Camp Crame, with President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo herself officiating the rites, revealed Executive Secretary Eduardo Ermita.

“The President is precisely coming (back on the 27th) to officiate the turnover (ceremonies),” Ermita stressed.

Versoza will be the 15th chief of the PNP since its conversion on Jan. 29, 1991 from the now defunct Philippine Constabulary-Integrated National Police (PC-INP) under the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) to its present status as a civilian police organization.

Versoza, whose three-star rank is equivalent to lieutenant general in the AFP, is currently the deputy PNP chief for administration.

A member of the Philippine Military Academy (PMA) Class of 1976, he formerly headed the Criminal Investigation and Detection Group (CIDG) after serving as director of PNP-Region IV (rachiu/PIA).

City Gov’t to “forcibly” cut illegal taps, solve flooding

30 days is all it takes for city mayor Dan Lim to spend on “due process” after which will wield the strong arm of the law.

Within the next 30 days deadline, the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) shall have issued notices and establishments should have voluntarily disconnected their taps.

And then the axes start falling, Mayor Lim reiterated during a recent drainage coordination meeting at the Mansion.

Present during the meeting were DPWH District engineer Celestino Adlaon, representatives from the regional office, Provincial Environment Officer Nestor Canda, City Mayor Dan Lim, representatives from Hanjin Heavy Industries Incorporated and Pacific Consultants.

Bohol Governor Erico Aumentado called for the meeting in hopes to finally resolve the issues behind the controversial drainage overflows flooding a city thoroughfare.

The overflow has been ascribed to a conduit closed by the local environment authorities to stop sewage from polluting the sea off Tagbilaran Bay.

The project consultants allegedly allowed the “illegal tapping” of commercial and residential establishments along Carlos P. Garcia Avenue to tap on the drainage; designed as a storm drain.

Himself clearly irritated by more finger pointing, this time from Hanjin Heavy Industries representatives during the meeting called Tuesday, Lim said he only needs the presence of technical men during the day he cuts the connections of those who refuse to do it voluntarily.

With Hanjin balking, Lim says now he only needs the local environment office to be with them.

Last week, Mayor Lim has chalked the deadline before the city government would forcibly disconnect the taps to assure that only rainwater run-off goes out of the drainage out-pour located at the dela Serna lot along Graham Avenue.

During the meeting, the governor also instructed PENRO Nestor Canda to monitor the water quality in San Jose and all the vicinities of Tagbilaran Bay so as to make sure that the possible water contamination, if any would be within tolerable limits.

Moreover, the governor also asked Canda to furnish the DPWH and the city government a copy of 31 illegal tap violators so as to facilitate the government’s next move. (rachiu/PIA)
