(PIA-Bohol)

Sandugo Trade Expo to highlight local products

MORE than 80 exhibitors with locally-manufactured products in the tourism, food, fashion, gifts, accessories, crafts, and houseware industries will take center stage in the longer-running provincial products fair in Bohol dubbed Sandugo Trade Expo.

According to the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) in Bohol, more exhibitors are expected to participate in the Sandugo Trade Expo 2010 set on July 21-25, 2010. The Expo is expected to provide exhibitors a chance to showcase their various products.

At said Expo, Visayan craft producers who joined a series of training and one-on-one consultations with expert designers will be presenting their work prototypes, says DTI Provincial Director Maria Elena Arbon.

“The Sandugo Trade Expo is a culmination of a series of product development initiatives geared towards improving the quality and design of the export-oriented crafts and ethnic food in the region,” said Arbon, adding that the Expo not only highlights the region’s unique products and services but will also make use of local ingenuity.

With Bohol becoming a bankable tourism destination, the fair shall also showcase emerging tourist destinations in the region, and ready packaged tours will be made readily available at the booths. (PIA-Bohol)

Malacañang set to review weather forecasting system

MALACAÑANG is set to review the country’s weather forecasting system after President Benigno “Noynoy” Aquino III admonished the state weather bureau for failing to predict that Typhoon Basyang was headed for Metro Manila.

President Aquino told reporters at Camp Aguinaldo that he wants more “precision” in the way the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) predicts weather movements.

The PAGASA weather bulletin on Tuesday said Basyang would batter Northern and Central Luzon areas, and listed Metro Manila among the areas that would be under Storm Signal No. 1, with 30 to 60 kilometers-per-hour winds. However, the storm hit the metropolis before dawn Wednesday, cutting off power supply in most areas.

“Changes should be known to the public at the earliest possible time,” said Aquino, adding that delays in weather forecast advisories slow down government response.

Aquino said there should also be improvements in the dissemination of information, such as finding ways to inform small-time fishermen who cannot afford radio equipment if there have been changes in the weather so they can immediately go back to shore.

Aquino earlier reprimanded PAGASA for failing to announce that the typhoon would hit hard Metro Manila. (PIA-Bohol)

Basyang leaves RP, heads for China

AS predicted by the Philippine Atmospheric Geophysical Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA), typhoon Basyang has left the Philippine area of responsibility Thursday morning.

The weather forecasters’ last weather bulletin on Basyang (international name Conson) reported that the typhoon was 400 kilometers west-northwest of Dagupan City as of 5:00 a.m. Thursday.

PAGASA says, “”Tropical Storm Conson has left the Philippine area of responsibility and threatens Hainan Island in China.”

Before leaving the country, Basyang was moving at a speed of 19 kilometers per hour, packing maximum winds of 85 kph and gustiness of up to 100 kph.

The government reported 23 deaths, 59 missing people, and 19 injured individuals.

The typhoon reached Philippine land areas Tuesday night and swept through Metro Manila and central Luzon, affecting almost 13,000 families.

A large part of Luzon suffered total power failure around dawn on Wednesday as Basyang damaged electric power transmission lines. (PIA-Bohol)

UP Law dean to head GRP panel in talks with MILF

UP College of Law dean Marvic Leonen will be the government’s chief negotiator in the resumption of peace talks with the Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF), Malacanang announced Thursday.

President Benigno “Noynoy” Aquino III, who is currently in Tuguegarao City to visit the wake of soldiers killed in action, said in a statement that he is committed to a consultative peace process so he has appointed Leonen — who he said understands the country’s history, different cultures, and aspirations — to head the government panel that will negotiate with the secessionist group.

Leonen, a constitutional expert who specializes in land issues, has taken part in convening a consortium of universities, many of which were from Mindanao, to examine the next phase of the peace process under the new administration.

Presidential Adviser on the Peace Process Teresita Deles said Leonen has “earned the respect of the peoples in Mindanao” because of his efforts to engage the academe and marginalized sectors and communities in resolving issues.

Leonen has worked on issues involving agrarian reform, access to justice, ancestral domain, health, environment, and international economic law. He said he will remain the dean of the UP College of Law despite his new role as the government’s chief negotiator with the MILF so UP can act as “a public service university.” (PIA-Bohol)
