NGCP: Visayas to suffer week-long brownouts

Iloilo City, Philippines — The Visayas regions are expected to have power interruptions for at least a week starting Monday. A major power plant in Leyte will be shut down for maintenance purposes.

In an advisory on Sunday, January 31, the National Grid Corporation of the Philippines (NGCP) said the preventive maintenance services on the 120-megawatt Mahanagdong geothermal power plant started on Saturday and was expected to last for 10 days.Other major plants in Cebu will also be shut down for maintenance services.

The Visayas grid, covering Western Visayas(Aklan, Antique, Capiz, Guimaras, Iloilo, and Negros Occidental), Central Visayas (Bohol, Cebu, Negros Oriental, and Siquijor) and Eastern Visayas (Biliran, Leyte, Southern Leyte, Northern Samar, Samar, and Eastern Samar) will suffer a decrease in supply of up to 200 MW.

The drop in supply is expected during peak hours on weekdays starting Monday.

RP and Belgium Sign Agreement Allowing Employment for Household Members of Diplomatic and Consular Personnel

Philippine Ambassador to Belgium Cristina G. Ortega reported to the Department of Foreign Affairs the signing of an Agreement that authorizes household members of diplomatic and consular personnel of both countries to work in their respective host countries.

She signed the agreement last 23 December 2009 on behalf of the Philippine Government while Secretary General of the Belgian Ministry of Foreign Affairs Dirk Achten signed for Belgium.

The agreement would allow the spouses, unmarried dependent children up to eighteen years old, and other household members of the diplomatic and consular personnel posted in the Philippines and Belgium, to be employed in these countries on a reciprocal basis.

They can also work in an international organization with a seat in the receiving State. (PIA)

Filipina Trapped in Collapsed Supermarket in Haiti Rescued

One of three Filipinas trapped inside a collapsed supermarket in Port-au-Prince, Haiti has been rescued and is now in safe condition.
In a report to the Philippine Permanent Mission to the United Nations in New York, 10th Philippine Contingent Commander Lieutenant Colonel Lope C. Dagoy said Aurora Aguinado is “safe and sound” after she was rescued inside the Caribbean Supermarket.

Rescuers continue efforts to extract another Filipina, Geraldine Calican, from the rubble in the supermarket area. Another Filipina, Grace Fabian, is also believed to be trapped in the collapsed structure. (PIA)

Anyone promising ending poverty in next 6 years is fraud – Noynoy

Anyone who promises to end poverty in a full presidential term is a fraud, says Liberal Party standard bearer Noynoy Aquino.

Poverty and other deep-seated problems of the country can not be solved by within a six-year term, he pressed as he said “the President is not a miracle worker”.

Stating his gameplan however if he becomes the president, Aquino said he intends to marshal people power to push for key economic and political reforms and in the crucial fight against corruption.

“What the country needs now is a president the people can trust, someone who will not steal, lie and cheat,” he said. (PIA)
