Bohol CSO’s to launch Climate Change primer On Earth day concert

TAGBILARAN CITY, April 21, (PIA)—Civil society groups aligned with sustainable environment make public a document labor of love which could guide individuals, families, businesses and government on fighting back climate change on International Earth Day, April 22.

The document, now to be called the Primer on Climate Change, is a production of an environment group called Bohol Nature Conservation Society (BONACONSO), and works on the premise that men are all intricately interconnected… to animals, plants, air, water, seas, soil, earth, and the ever-expanding universe.

The primer, which would be launched during a celebration concert by alternative artist and environmental advocate Joey Ayala, calls for building a critical mass of people who would be willing to change to make things better.

“We have to redefine the idea of progress as environmental degradation is intimately connected to human degradation,” the primer’s prologue states.

Also on that day, BONACONSO is proud to initiate the events which are aid to be the first time when Earth Day celebration is being spearheaded, not by the usual government, but the private sector comprising civil society organizations (CSO).

Picking up Halad Pasalamat para sa Kalikopan (thanksgiving offering for the environment) as theme, BONACONSO, through president Pat Ruiz said while usual earth day events include shutting down of power plants for hours, Bohol is having its own line-up of events.

First event of the day, April 22, is a 5:30 Tai chi at the Key of C Promenade, which would be participated by environment advocates, health and lifestyle conscious individuals and interested public as well.

Often described as meditation in motion, tai chi promotes serenity through gentle, flowing movements.

Tai chi is an ancient Chinese tradition that, today, is practiced as a graceful form of exercise. It involves a series of movements performed in a slow, focused manner and accompanied by deep breathing.

Tai chi, also called tai chi chuan, is a noncompetitive, self-paced system of gentle physical exercise and stretching. Each posture flows into the next without pause, ensuring that your body is in constant motion.

We need to get back the feel of the earth’s balance, regain the lost energies and be one with the environment, suggests a 60 plus member of BONACONSO, Flora Loquellano.

At 6:00, to give a statement of support to renewable energies and shunning from fossil fuels, Earth Day organizers bring in races for paddleboats for entertainment.

Sea gypsy paddlers, dragon boats and amateur paddlers take to the sea in a celebration of the water as among the key life elements, Loquellano added.

While the crowd breaks for the day, an environment concert with alternative artist and nationalist Joey Ayala unfolds at the K of C Drive, and BONACONSO has also prepared numbers, Ruiz said.

It would be a night of memories, we will be offering healing and thanksgiving rituals as Joey Ayala performs environmental advocacy numbers, Ruiz said. (rac/PIA-7/Bohol)

The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAG-ASA).
(ecb/PIA7-Bohol)

Increasing Malinao dam holding capacity, priority over de-silting

TAGBILARAN CITY, April 19, (PIA) –More than the reported need for dredging the allegedly heavily silted Malinao Dam to increase its water holding capacity, the National Irrigation Administration (NIA) thinks of something more proactive.

NIA 7 Regional Director Mario Sande, at the recent Kapihan sa PIA revealed that the primary intervention NIA is pursuing is not much of the de-silting the dam, but rather on increasing the dam height by about two meters.

The move would increase the farm irrigation capacity to 470 hectares more.

On the other hand, de-silting the Malinao dam, according to farmers, could disturb the dam floor and reopen a hole that has been accordingly plugged to stop the water from draining out.

The proposals to de-silt the dam came amidst forecasts of a strong El Nino this year.

Malinao, which holds five million cubic meters of water irrigates a total of 3,500 hectares, a few hundred hectares short of its initial target of 4,740 hectares, according to director Sande.

Diminishing water flow from its watersheds and siltation has drastically rendered the dam’s water impounding capacity less efficient, NIA said.

Meanwhile, by increasing the dam height, the current holding capacity of the dam increases by three million cubic meters, or a total of 8 million cubic meters, Director Sande said at the forum which was held at the new NIA conference room in Dao.

The Malinao Dam, notably Bohol’s biggest artificial inland body of water collected from nearby watersheds is just one of the four major irrigations systems Bohol farmers are benefitting.

Through a visual presentation during the Bisita Opisina of the Association of United Development Information Officers (AUDIO) in Bohol, NIA authorities also said by increasing the dam height, the move would mean sacrificing about 50 hectares of farmlands which would be submerged.

NIA through Director Sande added that Korean International Cooperation Agency (KOICA) has prepared a feasibility study and detailed engineering work for the proposed plan to increase the dam height.

The plan was for KOICA to fund the dam refurbishment, he continued.

But recent developments in the country’s economy shelved foreign funded projects over local funding, NIA’s director who has extensive assignments in Mindanao irrigation systems bared.

When that happened, KOICA turned over the proposal to NIA, while local experts studied the feasibility and its design.

From the design, a total revamp has been suggested by experts, and a P600 million is now in to start off the new project, Sande shared.

Over this development, NIA 7 which holds its regional office in Bohol, hopes that initial phase of the project could be implemented in the 2nd to third quarter of this year. (rac/PIA-7/Bohol)
