Pacquiao wins against Cotto by TKO, makes boxing history

Manny Pacquiao has once again proven himself as the best pound-for-pound boxer in the world, as he wins his 7th title belt by Technical Knockout (TKO) in the fight for the World Boxing Organization (WBO) Welterweight title against Puerto Rican Miguel Cotto.

Pacquiao took control of the fight in the second round and never let up, knocking Cotto down twice. The first was in Round 3 where Pacman gave Cotto a 1-2-3, and the second time was in Round 4, with 20 seconds left in the round.

For the most of the fight, Cotto was always back pedalling. Kenny Bayles step in at Round 12 to remind Cotto to keep his hands up, when he couldn’t do that he decided to stop the match at 55 seconds in the 12th round.

The match ended with Cotto bleeding from cuts near both eyes, as well as his from his nose. Pacquiao was credited with landing almost twice as many punches—336-172—as Cotto.

Pacquiao earned a minimum $13 million, while Cotto got $7 million.

Manny Pacquiao is the first to start a new record that no Asian boxer has ever achieved until now. which is winning seven world titles in seven different weight divisions – Flyweight (112 lbs), Super Bantamweight (122 lbs), Featherweight (126 lbs), Super Featherweight (130 lbs), Lightweight (135 lbs), Light Welterweight (140 lbs), and Welterweight (145 lbs).

Meanwhile, bantamweight contender Zeta Celestino Oliveros Gorres, who won a unanimous decision against American Juan Melendez in a 10-round bout and collapsed moments after his victory, is now recovering. He was taken to the University Medical Center, Las Vegas to relieve swelling on the left side of his head which was a subdural hematoma.

RP, Indonesia ties mark 60th year

Philippines and Indonesia ties mark 60 years. Established in 1949, key players of the two neighboring countries have gathered to celebrate the major gains of the Philippine-Indonesia bilateral ties.

On the occasion of the 60 Years Diplomatic Relations between Indonesia and Philippines held last month, the continuing Philippine-Indonesia relations is viewed as a “catalyst” in the growth, stability and security of the Brunei Darussalam-Indonesia-Malaysia-the Philippines East ASEAN Growth Area (BIMP-EAGA).

The two countries have been strong trade and investment partners, marked by the bullish and sustained economic exchanges.

The strong Philippine-Indonesia relations was also noted with establishing closer ties between each local government unit as seen through the success of the Jose Abad Santos-Glan and Sarangani Cooperation Triangle (JAGS-CT) which effectively generated concrete gains in the sisterhood agreement on trade, tourism and education. Filipino Efren Penaflorida, has been recognized as one of the “2009 Top 10 CNN Heroes” by the CNN Blue Ribbon Panel, a search for unheralded heroes, people driver to exceptional achievement in service to others.

A teacher and social worker, Efren “Kuya Ef” Peñaflorida, Jr. is acknowledged for his outstanding advocacy to educate Filipino out-of-school youth through “pushcart classes.” At sixteen, he recruited three fellow high school students to teach children in the slum areas every Saturday and initiated Dynamic Teen Company (DTC) to help provide free tutorials to underserved Filipino youth. Today, DTC’s “pushcart classroom” also teaches basic reading and writing to street children.

RP is world’s offshoring destination of the year for second time

The Philippines has once again been chosen, by the 4th National Outsourcing Association Awards in London, as the 2009 Offshoring Destination of the Year. Thus further boosting up the morale of the local outsourcing industry, a manifestation that the outsourcing sector in the Philippines is world class and has the capacity to compete with the best.

“Time and again, the Philippines has validated its status as a world BPO market leader. We at the Business Processing Association of the Philippines (BPAP) will continue to give our efforts in making the industry achieve bigger and greater milestones,” says BPAP Chief Executive Officer Mr. Oscar Sanez.

BPAP submitted the Philippine entry for the NOA category nomination with the help of the Philippine Commercial Attache’s office in London. BPAP is the umbrella trade association of the Philippine BPO industry representing the entire spectrum of BPO and IT-enabled services including customer service, back office outsourcing, software development, engineering design, digital animation, and game development. ASEAN leaders eye intra-regional connectivity

At the 15th ASEAN Summit and Related Summits, ASEAN leaders eyes intra-regional connectivity wanting to enhance both in terms of transportation and communication.

ASEAN has the potential to become the transportation, information and communication technology and the tourism hub of the region.

Intra-regional connectivity will benefit all ASEAN member states through enhanced trade, investment, tourism and development.

The concept will complement regional efforts to make ASEAN Community by 2015 a reality by fostering a sense of shared cultural and historical linkages.

Noting the importance of the Internet in business, education, and development, the leaders agreed that it is also crucial to complete the ASEAN ICT Masterplan in 2010 to enhance intra-regional information and communications technology linkages.

They also concluded that they must seek the support of their dialogue partners notably China, Japan, and South Korea, establish the necessary fund. (PIA)

PGMA, 9 ASEAN leaders cite need for rice reserve

President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo, together with the 9 ASEAN leaders, want to set up a permanent regional emergency rice reserve due to the increased frequency and intensity of natural disasters that hit the region.

This was dsicussed by the ASEAN and China, Japan and South Korea, or ASEAN Plus 3 at the 12th ASEAN Plus 3 Summit.

The ASEAN leaders noted that the East Asia Emergency Rice Reserve (EAERR) Pilot Project is due to expire in February 2010. It is thus necessary to transform the project into a permanent aid mechanism under the ASEAN Plus 3 Emergency Rice Reserve (APTERR).

They urged their respective agriculture and foreign ministers to work closely towards the early realization of APTERR in order to ensure the continuation of regional food security mechanism after the expiration of the EARR Pilot Project. (PIA)
