OWWA launches Search for 2009 Model OFW Family of the Year

The Overseas Workers Welfare Administration (OWWA) launches the Search for 2009 Model OFW Family of the Year Award (MOFYA).

The aforementioned search aims to give recognition to the outstanding achievements of the Overseas Filipino Workers (OFWs) together with their families and likewise, in order to promote best practices in managing family challenges.

The nomination and selection criteria of the Model OFW Family of the Year Award are as follows: for the nomination criteria, one should be the head of the family or main provider of the family; supports the education of a child / family member/s; known as a solid and stable family in the community; and financial stability.

Under the selection criteria: wholesome OFW family, 50%; civic/community involvement of OFW, 20%; success in children’s or family member/s education, 20%; and lastly, success in managing family finances, 10%. (PIA)

DOST extends national Biotech Week logo design contest

The deadline for the National Biotech Week (NBW) Logo Design Contest is extended. The Department of Science and Technology (DOST) will still accept entries until the end of August.

The NBW Logo Design Contest is open to Filipino citizens, individuals and groups. Logo designs must symbolize the application and benefits of biotechnology and also reflect this year’s NBW theme: “Bioteknolohiya para sa Kalikasan, Kalusugan, Kagandahan, Kabuhayan at Kaunlaran”. (PIA)

RP hosts 2009 ASEAN Quiz Bee

The Philippines is the host country for the 4th ASEAN Quiz Bee which will be on November 18 to 22, 2009. It will be conducted by the National Broadcasting Network in partnership with the Department of Education, Department of Foreign Affairs, Office of the Press Secretary, and the Philippine Information Agency.

The ASEAN Quiz Bee is a bi-annual project of the ASEAN Committee on Culture and Information (COCI) that aims to foster the spirit of healthy competition among ASEAN youth in a friendly quiz game that exposes them to ASEAN cultural, political, economic and social information.

The competition is open to all 4th year high school students from public or private schools, who are proficient in English and with above average grade in Social Studies in the last semester.

The ASEAN Quiz Regional Level is participated by the ten ASEAN member countries. (PIA)

DepEd kicks off search for outstanding reading teacher

The 2009 Search for Outstanding Reading Teacher (SORT), to honor the country’s top reading teachers and their important contribution to the field of literacy, starts yesterday (July 23). This was the announcement disclosed by the Department of Education Secretary Jesli Lapus.

SORT is open to all public elementary school teachers from Grades 1 to 6. The nominee should be a full-time public elementary school teacher with at least three years of teaching experience in Reading. All public schools are encouraged to submit nominees to their DepEd division offices, whose Division SORT Committee will determine the Division winner and submit to the Regional SORT Committee.

The criteria for the contest are: demonstration teaching = 40%, interview = 20%, essay writing = 20 % and document = 20%. The winners will get their awards during the ceremony to be held on October 16, 2009.

Meanwhile, Lapus also announced that the National Read-A-Thon (NRAT) contest will also be held together with the SORT. This is conducted to determine the best individual and team readers among elementary pupils in public schools.

For this school year, the contest is in Filipino for grade 3 pupils and English for Grade 5 pupils. Schools, divisions and regions can conduct the Read-a-Thon for all grade levels in both English and Filipino.

The NRAT has three contests namely Best Team Readers, Best in Story Retelling and Best in Oral Reading Interpretation. (DepEd)

Feature: On COPS award

The search for the Country’s Outstanding Policemen in Service 2009″ or COPS yielded awardees of four (4) police officers and six (6) non-commissioned officers. The awarding rites was done at the Malacañang Palace. The search for outstanding cops is an activity of the Metrobank Foundation aimed at recognizing exemplary contributions to peace and order by policemen nationwide.

The annual COPS award is a recognition that the police force and its members can be depended upon for security and in effecting programs which help in improving the people and the community.

With the police visible in community undertakings and the improved community relations there is reason to hope for a more developed country. (PIA)

Parole and probation office marks 33rd year with sound mind, body

The Parole and Probation Administration office marks its 33 years of public service on July 24, 2009. This is to be highlighted by the observance of Parole and Probation Week starting July 18 with the theme of “Sound Mind in a Sound Body: The Key to Outstanding Public Service.”

The office is implementing a program to rehabilitate probationers, parolees and pardonees and promote their development as integral persons by utilizing innovative interventions and techniques which respect the dignity of man and recognize his divine destiny.

Probation is a privilege granted to a person convicted of a criminal offense to serve punishment outside prison, subject to conditions imposed by the sentencing court and under the supervision of a Probation and Parole Officer.

On the other hand, parole refers to the conditional release of an offender from a correctional institution after serving the minimum period of prison sentence under the continued custody of the State and under conditions that permit reincarceration for violation of a condition for release.
