MALACAÑANG has acknowledged that eliminating or minimizing red tape in government is still a challenge but the country has been making progress.
It was reported that the country’s ASEAN neighbors were able to post significant gains in fighting red tape in their respective bureaucracies.
The government is exerting efforts to ensure that local government units comply with the Anti-Red Tape Act, Deputy Presidential spokesperson Abigail Valte said in a press briefing in Malacanang on Friday.
“Kailangan diyan; isa ‘yung Citizen’s Charter. So ngayon mino-monitor natin ‘yung compliance nila (LGUs) by way of what we call the Anti-Red Tape Act report card survey,” Valte said.
With the report card survey, the public can now check whether their respective municipalities comply with the Anti-Red Tape Act, she said.
Valte also reported that based on the latest government data there are 317 LGUs with “excellent” ratings on their report cards, 309 rated as “good”, 60 “acceptable”, and 36 getting “fail” mark.
“Ang inaasahan natin ay magsikap ‘yang ating mga LGU para lahat sila ay excellent na sa kanilang Anti-Red Tape report card,” she said.
Among the Aquino administration’s reform agenda are fighting corruption and reforming the bureaucracy for more efficient government functions. Eliminating red tape in government would mean improved business conditions and more effective service to the people. (PND)

TAGBILARAN CITY, Bohol, June 27 (PIA)–Filipinos still need to get a visa to visit Japan, contrary to a report circulating on the internet.
On Thursday, the Japanese embassy issued a statement denying it had removed visa requirements for Filipinos.
“The Embassy of Japan in the Philippines would like to clarify to the public that Japan has not lifted the visa exemption for the Philippines contrary to the recent reports. However, Japan has opened multiple-entry Visas to Filipinos,” it said.
Japan only granted visa exemptions to nationals of Thailand and Malaysia.
Japan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs issued a statement on June 25 saying it is granting multiple entry visas for Filipino citizens, valid for three years.
“In celebration of the 40th Year of ASEAN-Japan Friendship and Cooperation, the Government of Japan has decided to begin issuance from July 1, of multiple entry visas for short-term stay to nationals of the Republic of the Philippines (ordinary passport holders) who reside in their home country,” the MOFA said on its website.
With the visa, Filipinos may stay for 15 days in Japan. The multiple entry visa will be valid for up to three years.
Filipinos who are interested in getting a visa to Japan should apply at the Japanese embassy through accredited agencies. The Japanese embassy in the Philippines does not accept direct visa applications. (PIA)
