Aquino conferred Doctor of Laws degree by Fordham University

PRESIDENT Benigno S. Aquino III was formally conferred an honorary degree by Fordham University during his visit on Monday. Fordham University officials led by its president Fr. Joseph McShane, S.J. presented the President with his Doctor of Laws degree honoris causa in ceremonies held at the institution’s Keating Hall, Rose Hill Campus, Bronx, New York. In his remarks after the conferment, the President expressed awe at being conferred a degree saying that he was “struck by the symbolism” of the event. “I am struck by the symbolism of Fordham’s tradition of literally carving in stone, the names of leaders upon whom you have conferred honorary doctorates,” the President said.

President Aquino now joins over 30 others, including that of his mother, whose names are carved on the steps of what is known as the “Terrace of the Presidents” at Keating Hall. The President’s name was carved next to that of his mother, the late President Corazon Aquino, who also received an honorary degree from Fordham in September 1986. (PCOO)

Malacanang says result of Pulse Asia ‘Ulat ng Bayan’ survey exemplifies undying support and confidence of Filipinos to President Aquino’s leadership

MALACANANG cited the increasing trust and confidence of the Filipinos on the accountability, competence and efficiency of President Benigno S. Aquino III in pursuing his social contract with the people especially in his efforts in effecting reforms and curbing graft and corruption in the bureaucracy as indicated in the recent survey conducted by a recognized polls entity.

In his statement during a regular press briefing at the Palace on Thursday, Presidential Spokesperson Edwin Lacierda said that the results of the Pulse Asia “Ulat ng Bayan” survey conducted from August 20 to September 2, 2011 exemplifies the undying support and
confidence of the people on the leadership of President Aquino.

“The recently-released Pulse Asia Ulat ng Bayan survey, in which President Aquino recorded significant increases in his approval (from 71 to 77 percentage points) and trust ratings (from 71 to 75 percentage points), is an affirmation that more than a year into the current administration, the people’s faith in their leadership has not wavered, and has in fact become stronger,” Lacierda said.

“The message is getting across to the vast majority of Filipinos: President Aquino’s ratings are proof that his efforts toward curbing corruption and reducing poverty are truly being felt by Filipinos across all geographic and demographic strata,” he added.

Lacierda noted that with these recent developments, the Aquino government is bent on continuing its efforts to exert more developmental actions that will further uplift the lives of the Filipino citizenry.

“It is expected that survey numbers will fluctuate, and while we in government appreciate this development, we continue to raise the bar higher for ourselves so that every aspect of the President’s Social Contract with the Filipino People will be fulfilled,” Lacierda stressed.

Pulse Asia recently released the results of their Presidential Performance and Trust Ratings survey conducted from August 20 to September 2, 2011 using face-to-face interviews.

The nationwide assessment is based on a sample of 1,200 representative adults, 18 years old and above. It has a ± 3% error margin at the 95% confidence level. sub-national estimates for each of the geographic areas covered in the survey (i.e., Metro Manila, the rest of Luzon, Visayas and Mindanao) have a ± 6% error margin, also at 95% confidence level.

Pulse Asia, Inc. is a public opinion polling body launched by professional academics, recognized as experts in their respective fields of study. It monitors salient socio-economic, political and cultural issues in the minds of the Filipino public. (PCOO)

Campaign against tax evaders and smugglers paying off – Aquino

GOVERNMENT efforts to run after tax evaders and smugglers are “paying off” after President Benigno S. Aquino III said that revenue collection for the first six months of this year has increased dramatically.

In his speech keynoting the 1st Integrity Summit held at the Grand Ballroom of the Marriot Hotel in Pasay City Wednesday, President Aquino revealed that the government’s campaign against tax evaders and smugglers had helped in putting in much needed revenues into government coffers by as much as 13.47 percent.

“Since we assumed office, we have worked on improving our tax administration efforts and some of the things we have done is run after tax evaders, smugglers and corrupt government officials,” the President told the gathering of local and global corporate leaders, anti-corruption experts, and senior government officials.

He noted that since July 2010 a total of 61 tax evasion cases and 43 smuggling cases have been filed against these groups and individuals “with claims totaling around P26-billion and 54-billion, respectively.”

“As we continue to monitor these cases, I am happy to report that our campaign against tax evaders and smugglers is paying off,” the President said.

“From January to July this year, revenues collected have already increased by 13.47 percent year on year,” he added.

He said that these “taxes that could have gone to social services, infrastruchture, debt reduction or national defense” had the previous administration been more alert to the situation. (PCOO)
