WWFund aims to surpass 09 Earth Hour advocates

EARTH Hour organizers WWF hope to zoom past the 4000 cities in 88 countries who voluntarily switched off their lights to advance awareness on the 2010 Earth Hour.

Wanting to impress on the need to advocate mitigations for climate change, the one hour switch off which started in Sydney Australian in 2007, organizers now wish that through the activity, they could post the largest global climate change initiative.

Last week the Environment Bureau information Officer Corazon Colarines said the local office is coordinating the activity support here.

Set for Saturday, March 27, the activity asks people to switch off their lights from 8:30 to 9:30 PM.

There is more to it than just switching off the lights, it gives people the chance to voice out their concerns on protecting the only planet tat we have, organizers from WWF were quoted.

Obama invites 2 Filipinos to entrepreneurship summit in Washington

US President Barack Obama has invited two Filipino entrepreneurs to join the Presidential Summit on Entrepreneurship that will be held at the Ronald Reagan Building in Washington, D.C., from April 26 to 27, the US Embassy in Manila said on Monday.

The Filipinos—Joey Concepcion and Bai Sandra Basar—will join participants from over 40 countries in five continents in an event hosted by Obama together with the Department of State and the Department of Commerce.

Concepcion is a businessman, entrepreneurship consultant and co-founder of the Philippine Center for Entrepreneurship Inc. whose “Go Negosyo” movement pushes for optimism and the business spirit among Filipinos.

Basar is a member of the Board of the Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao Business Council and a member of the Mindanao Regional Development Council in Region 12.

The summit will identify how Washington can deepen ties between business leaders, foundations and entrepreneurs in the US and Muslim communities around the world. (PIA-Bohol)

RP advises against travel to Thailand on March 12

THE Department of Foreign Affairs on Tuesday advised Filipinos against traveling to Thailand on Friday, March 12, in view of the protest rallies being planned in key areas of Bangkok that day.

Thus, “Filipinos are advised to postpone all non-essential travel to Thailand, specifically Bangkok,” the DFA said in its advisory.

“Filipinos who are already in Thailand are advised to avoid areas that have been identified as meeting areas and staging areas for the rallyists,” it added.

Thousands of travelers, including Filipinos, were stranded in late 2008 when Bangkok’s international airport Suvarnabhumi was shut down by protesters trying to topple the government. All flights were cancelled stranding thousands of passengers in the airport for a couple of weeks. (PIA-Bohol)

75 Filipinos in quake-hit Chile safe — DFA

The 75 documented Filipinos residing or working in Chile have been accounted for and reported safe, the spokesman of the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) said on Sunday.

“So far, they do not have any reports of any Filipinos who have been affected or hurt during the earthquake. They have been able to account for almost all of the Filipinos,” DFA spokesman Eduardo Malaya told in an interview on Sunday afternoon, citing information from the Philippine embassy in Chile.

He added that a worker in the embassy had only injured his ankle at the height of the 8.8-magnitude earthquake that jolted the South American country early Saturday morning.

Contrary to earlier reports that there were about 89 Filipinos in Chile, Malaya said there were only 75 Filipinos serving as missionaries, engineers and businessmen or were spouses of Chile nationals.

Malaya also quoted Philippine Ambassador to Argentina Rey Carandang as saying that Filipinos in Argentina, located east of Chile, “were fine.” As of Sunday noon, international media pegged the quake’s death toll to about 214. (PIA-Bohol)

Scientists defend alert after tsunami non-event

Honolulu — The devastating tidal wave that the oceanographers predicted for Hawaii never materialized. And by Sunday, authorities have lifted the warning after waves half the predicted size tickled the shores of Hawaii and tourists once again jammed beaches and restaurants.

However, scientists who gave the warning believed they need not apologize for the inacurate information that caused great alarm.

Scientists acknowledge that they overstated the threat but defended their actions, saying they took the proper steps and learned the lessons of the 2004 Indonesian tsunami that killed thousands of people who didn’t get enough warning.

“It’s a key point to remember that we cannot end the warnings. Failure to warn is not an option for us,” said Dai Lin Wang, an oceanographer at the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center in Hawaii.

“We cannot have a situation that we thought was no problem and then it’s devastating. That just cannot happen,” Wang added.

Many residents and tourists in Hawaii though were not bothered by the warnings. They believed that the scientists “did the right thing”.

LAT – LATITUDE (N-NORTH, S-SOUTH)
LON – LONGITUDE (E-EAST, W-WEST)
TIME – TIME OF THE MEASUREMENT (Z IS UTC IS GREENWICH TIME)
AMPL – TSUNAMI AMPLITUDE MEASURED RELATIVE TO NORMAL SEA LEVEL.
IT IS …NOT… CREST-TO-TROUGH WAVE HEIGHT.
VALUES ARE GIVEN IN BOTH METERS(M) AND FEET(FT).
PER – PERIOD OF TIME IN MINUTES(MIN) FROM ONE WAVE TO THE NEXT.

EVALUATION

SEA LEVEL READINGS CONFIRM THAT A TSUNAMI HAS BEEN GENERATED
WHICH COULD CAUSE DAMAGE FAR FROM ITS SOURCE. AUTHORITIES SHOULD
TAKE APPROPRIATE ACTION IN RESPONSE TO THIS THREAT. THIS CENTER
WILL CONTINUE TO MONITOR SEA LEVEL DATA TO DETERMINE THE EXTENT
AND SEVERITY OF THE THREAT.

A TSUNAMI IS A SERIES OF WAVES AND THE FIRST WAVE MAY NOT BE THE
LARGEST. TSUNAMI WAVE HEIGHTS CANNOT BE PREDICTED AND CAN VARY
SIGNIFICANTLY ALONG A COAST DUE TO LOCAL EFFECTS. THE TIME FROM
ONE TSUNAMI WAVE TO THE NEXT CAN BE FIVE MINUTES TO AN HOUR, AND
THE THREAT CAN CONTINUE FOR MANY HOURS AS MULTIPLE WAVES ARRIVE.

FOR ALL AREAS – WHEN NO MAJOR WAVES ARE OBSERVED FOR TWO HOURS
AFTER THE ESTIMATED TIME OF ARRIVAL OR DAMAGING WAVES HAVE NOT
OCCURRED FOR AT LEAST TWO HOURS THEN LOCAL AUTHORITIES CAN ASSUME
THE THREAT IS PASSED. DANGER TO BOATS AND COASTAL STRUCTURES CAN
CONTINUE FOR SEVERAL HOURS DUE TO RAPID CURRENTS. AS LOCAL
CONDITIONS CAN CAUSE A WIDE VARIATION IN TSUNAMI WAVE ACTION THE
ALL CLEAR DETERMINATION MUST BE MADE BY LOCAL AUTHORITIES.

ESTIMATED INITIAL TSUNAMI WAVE ARRIVAL TIMES AT FORECAST POINTS
WITHIN THE WARNING AND WATCH AREAS ARE GIVEN BELOW. ACTUAL
ARRIVAL TIMES MAY DIFFER AND THE INITIAL WAVE MAY NOT BE THE
LARGEST. A TSUNAMI IS A SERIES OF WAVES AND THE TIME BETWEEN
SUCCESSIVE WAVES CAN BE FIVE MINUTES TO ONE HOUR.
