DOH records 16,000 dengue cases in first half of 2009

The Department of Health (D-O-H) National Epidemiology Center (N-E-C) has noted 16, 317 dengue admissions in government hospitals since January to August this year.

Dengue fever, which proved to be more alarming than swine flu has also killed 165 since then.

Over this, President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo has ordered the D-O-H to intensify its campaign through its public health educational programs.

The President has also asked local government units and national health officials to cooperate in combating the scourge especially in depressed communities, said Deputy Spokesperson Anthony Golez.

Part of the DOH mandate, according to Golez is to destroy mosquito breeding grounds. The D-O-H has also recommended defogging in cases where dengue has already become an outbreak. (PIA)
