Gov’t taking steps to ensure power supply during summer

Malacañang assured the public Thursday the government is taking steps to ensure continued power supply during the hot summer months, when demand for electricity is expected to go up.

Presidential Communications Operations Office Secretary Herminio “Sonny” Coloma Jr. said Energy Secretary Carlos Jericho Petilla had assured government is ready to run the Malaya thermal plant up to 70 days.

“Government is taking necessary steps to ensure continuity of power supply during the summer season. According to Secretary Petilla, the government is prepared to run the Malaya thermal power plant up to 70 days to boost supply during the summer months, when demand is expected to rise especially in Luzon,” Coloma said at a media briefing.

But he also said the Department of Energy has advised power plants to conduct preventive and regular maintenance of their facilities so they will operate during the months when demand for power peaks.

Demand for electricity is expected to rise during the hot summer months as households and establishments operate appliances to beat the heat. (PND)
