KMMP intends to help micro, small and medium enterprises upgrade their businesses through coaching and mentoring activities by big brother business owners and practitioners. The coaching would be on the various aspects and different stages of entrepreneurships, offered through the Go Negosyo Centers, explains Virgilio Espeleta, Boholano dean of the PCE and who talked about the mentoring program set in Bohol this May. He said there are just a few interventions for entrepreneurs to up-scale their businesses. While he cited the concept of Shared Service Facilities (SSF) that allows machineries and facilities through government intervention, the business expert picks mentoring as crucial in providing the business know-how to budding entrepreneurs ready to enlarge their businesses. He also said mentoring can also come in the form of giving management tips if only to allow them to gain a good business sense especially on the fundamentals of entrepreneurship. The DTI believes that a way to assist MSMES scale up and sustain their business enterprises by equipping them and empowering them with the skills needed for such. Invest in innovation to globalize MSMEs

The Philippines recently co-hosted with Chinese Taipei the “APEC Policy Dialogue on MSME Marketplace & O2O Forum” targeted at promoting the application of online-to-offline (O2O) business models and encouraging MSMEs to invest in innovation.   Since the inception of APEC O2O initiative in 2015, the Forum has showcased more than 200 best practices in the Asia-Pacific region. For the Philippines, three innovative startups have won the O2O best practice awards namely: Medifi, revolutionizing healthcare with cloud based health profile management, video consultations, and medical imaging support; SnipePH, your one-stop solutions partner for employment engagement and business needs, and; recently we have BeamAndGo, specializing in consumer-related E-Commerce products and the first in the Philippines to offer a digital SMS gifting solution delivered as a text message.   “Technological innovations have the capacity to reduce costs, allowing ease of doing business which enables SMEs to access resources they need to grow and expand their business and accelerate the on-boarding of currently excluded markets into the global economy.” DTI Regional Operations Group (ROG) Undersecretary Zenaida Maglaya said.   According to the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD), e-commerce helps local businesses access global value chains. It enables them to have a presence in foreign markets through exports and imports. This process leads to higher productivity because of more efficient use of technology, heightened competition, and greater consumer choice; and creates jobs as firms start to expand. The Asia-Pacific region has the largest market share in the digital economy, accounting for 33% of total market scale but only a few SMEs in APEC are currently taking full advantage of new digital opportunities.  ...

Is it time to embrace cloud computing?

By: Jerome Auza It’s highly likely that you may have heard about cloud computing and how it is improving business processes. If you haven’t heard about it, chances are, you have been using cloud based services already. The popular social network websites extensively use cloud technologies to deploy their services. If you are an SME in Bohol, would you consider running some of your business processes on the cloud? You probably should. From a cost perspective, it will might sense. For example, to implement an accounting system, the usual solution is to buy a server computer. Server grade hardware can cost upwards of Php60,000. If you need the services to run 24×7, you need to have a backup battery, a backup generator and of course, you need to pay for the electricity cost. You probably also need to put air conditioning system to keep the server cool. And if you need users to access the server remotely, you need to have an Internet connection service with large upload bandwidth. Lastly, you need to perform backups and deal with hardware failures. In contrast, deploying a cloud server doesn’t have any large upfront cost. Instead, there is a flat monthly rate for the server and a variable cost for the amount of data transferred from the server to the users. A cloud server with 4 GB RAM, 120GB storage and dual core cpu can cost between Php5,000 to Php10,000/month depending on the hosting company you use. For SME use, smaller servers may do. I have used 256MB RAM, 10GB servers that cost about $15/month for a simple application that needs to...
