ASEAN, FTA partners meet for RCEP in Manila

MANILA—Trade officials from 10 ASEAN Members States (AMS) and six free trade agreement (FTA) partners China, Korea, Japan, Australia, New Zealand and India are all set for the 18th Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership (RCEP) Trade Negotiating Committee (TNC) Meeting and Related Meetings from 8 to 12 May 2017. “RCEP should be able to demonstrate that we continue to underscore the developmental function of international trade that benefits ultimately the broader base of the economy,” said Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) Secretary Ramon Lopez, who also serves as chairperson of the ASEAN Economic Ministers (AEM) Meetings 2017. To keep the momentum going, it becomes all the more important that the overall RCEP package will suit the developmental needs of the RCEP Parties. “For the Philippines, RCEP should translate to more jobs and more business opportunities leading to higher incomes for many Filipinos,” the trade chief added. Deeper ‘integration’ through RCEP The ASEAN-centric and ASEAN-led RCEP is considered the new tailwind for global growth as it heads towards a more substantive phase following 17 rounds. The Manila Round will entail redoubling of efforts in order to deliver the broader and deeper commitments being called for goods, services and investment liberalization given the mandate of Leaders to substantially conclude RCEP this year. RCEP aims to achieve a modern, comprehensive, high-quality and mutually beneficial economic partnership agreement. Once concluded, this will further contribute in deepening ASEAN’s economic integration and heighten its role in global trade and investment. RCEP is poised to boost global growth by expanding the ASEAN consumer base of 620 million to 3.5 billion, integrating the major economic player markets,... read more

Using data outlets for connecting devices on the wired network

Structured Cabling System Series By: Jerome Auza We are all familiar with the electrical outlets that are normally found on the walls around our houses and offices. Because of the lethal effects of touching a live electrical wire, we literally have no choice but to wire our electrical outlets properly and using outlets fixed on the walls. Data outlets that are fixed on walls or tables should be used when implementing a computer network. But unlike electrical outlets, there is no danger of users being electrocuted. Rather, the reason for using data outlets is to ensure that the part of the network from the rack to the data outlet is fixed on the building structure. This offers long term reliability of the network. The user will just need to use a patch cord to connect the computer or other devices to the data outlet. Untrained installers sometimes just connect computers directly to the network switches using a long patch cord. This is bad practice since it can easily lead to “spaghetti” network where the cables become so organized as the number of network connections increase. In office environments, some users may need to have both telephone and a computer network connection. Fortunately, cabling for computer networks will work for telephone connections also so two data outlets per user is ideal. The user will have flexibility of using one of the network ports for the computer. The other is for telephone or another device to be connected to the network such as VOIP phones to connect to IP-PBX systems. Data outlets may be installed in 1-gang, 2-gang, 4-gang or 6-gang...

Bohol convenes the country’s 1st multi-sector health summit

THE country’s first provincial government convened Health Summit happened here in Tagbilaran Thursday, October 7, 2010. The health summit gathered Bohol’s health sector representatives including chief of government hospitals, devolved health facilities, rural health unit heads, health sector representatives, government sector, media and non-government organization representatives to map out plans to make the still usually “hard to access” affordable health and medical services for the poor. Health assistant Secretary Pauline Jean Ubial, who came in leiu of Secretary Enrique Ona, heaped praises for the Bohol initiative. She admitted that similar health summits were conducted on the national and regional levels but these were convened by the national government through the Department of Health. “This is the first time that I heard of a health summit called by a province, and his is truly a first in the country”, Asec Ubial said. Governor Edgar M. Chatto said the move to promote effective and comprehensive health care systems for Boholanos has been one of his main priorities since he assumed powed in June. In his message, he shared that somehow Bohol’s poor have asked why it has not been as easy and affordable for them to access medical care services. On the first day of the summit, a pandoras box of health sector issues tumbled open as Boholano sectors poured in a multitude of problems and proposed solutions in focused discussions and group workshops. Some of the issues involved the incapacity of the District hospitals to respond to the poor’s medical service needs, the lack of manpower, financial assistance to indigent patients and the seemingly politicized access to government ambulance services....

Anti rabies program hits 2-years sans rabies mark

TWO years and counting. Bohol anti-rabies advocates and Boholanos has a reason to pick October 8, 2010 as a day of celebration: the day completes a two year mark when health authorities have not found any rabies case in human or canines involved in bite cases all over the province’s 47 towns and a city. The last reported canines rabie case was in October 8, 2008, or exactly two years ago, shared Bohol veterinarian Dr. Stella Marie Lapiz during the recent Kapihan sa PIA. At the weekly forum aired live over DyTR and broadcast from the PIA at K of C Drive in this city, Dr. Lapiz said that while Bohol may be declared as the next rabies free province in the country if the zero rabies case is sustained for three years, floating in the horizon however is a bigger goal, to be declared internationally as a model for its community based efforts against rabies. According to the Department of Health, absence of human and canine rabies occurrence in a place for three consecutive years merits a declaration as rabies free. To date, the island province of Siquijor has kept its citation as rabies free. For Dr. Lapiz, while Bohol has been using international standards in its moritoring and evaluation for its rabies program, snagging an international recognition may not be that distant goal. Keeping her hands close to her chest, Dr Lapiz said all of the achievements so far, she credits to the man Boholano barangay volunteers, communities and the international and national donors whose funding support has kept the program yapping. Bohol used to be ranked...
