PH pushes for promotion of creative industries in ASEAN

The Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) through its Design Center of the Philippines (Design Center) will be holding the ASEAN Creative Cities Forum and Exhibition (ACCFE) slated on 24-27 April 2017 at the Bonifacio Global City in Taguig.   Through ACCFE, the country aims to promote the lucrative economic potentials of its creative industries, creative clusters, and creative cities as a viable strategy for sustainable and inclusive development in the region. “This is also a key initiative to usher the membership of at least one Philippine city in the UNESCO Creative Cities Network by 2018 and further support the development of the 2017 Creative Industries Roadmap,” highlighted DTI Trade and Investments Promotion Group Undersecretary and ASEAN 2017 Committee on Business and Investment Promotion (CBIP) Chairperson Nora K. Terrado.   The event also aims to establish DTI and its Design Center of the Philippines as key players in the development of the Philippine Creative Industries particularly in the area of design. “The Philippines is teeming with rich talent in various creative fields, including sectors that are under Design Center’s mandate—product design, fashion, graphic design. It’s about time we recognize this, and harness this pool of creativity towards a movement that will be beneficial to all creative stakeholders,” shares Rhea O. Matute, Executive Director of the Design Center. Creative economy is an emerging concept that deals with creativity, culture, economics and technology. Vital to this emerging type of economy are goods and services that use creativity and intellectual property as primary inputs. “To have one Philippine city included in the UNESCO Creative Cities Network would mean that every Filipino’s... read more

Eastern Visayas, Bicol’s best, finest products at SM Mega Trade Halls

The Deparment of Trade and Industry (DTI) is set to showcase an annual display of micro, small and medium enterprise (MSME) excellence by bringing the best and finest products from Eastern Visayas and Bicol Regions for the Bahandi Eastern Visayas and OKB-Gayon Bicol Regional Trade Fairs on October 4 and 5, respectively, at the SM Mega Trade Halls 1 and 2, SM Megamall.   As part of Marketing, one of the seven-point strategy (7Ms strategy) advocated by the Department, DTI is helping MSMEs penetrate the mainstream marketing through trade fairs.   “With MSMEs being the backbone of the Philippine economy, it is important that we find ways to integrate the sector to bigger value chains, either in the public or the private sectors. Empowering MSMEs can only mean significant growth that is powered by ever smarter Filipino entrepreneurs, ready to participate in local, regional and global marketplace,” said DTI Secretary Ramon Lopez.   DTI-Regional Operations Group Supervising Undersecretary Zenaida Maglaya explained that providing platforms for MSMEs to market their products in events such as trade fairs will test its marketability for bigger markets.   “Participation in Trade Fairs provide MSMEs an opportunity to test their products for bigger markets and beyond,” Maglaya said.   These MSMEs, according to Maglaya, have been assisted by DTI through Negosyo Centers, Shared Service Facilities (SSF), One Town, One Product, Kapatid Mentor ME Project, SME Roving Academy, among others.   “By enhancing MSME products through DTI assistance, we are confident that their products would be market-acceptable, and supported locally and globally,” she said.   The Bahandi Trade Fair, through the DTI-Region 8, will...

Storage Technologies to Watch Out For

The past few years, solid state drives or SSD have gradually become optional or even standard storage device on laptops. SSDs have data input/output speeds of several hundred megabytes per second and virtually no delay on first time access to the device. This is many times better than the traditional hard disk drives or HDD which also have a big disadvantage: moving parts. The spinning media on the HDD limits its I/O speed, requires much more power than SSD and is often the reason for HDD failures.   SSDs are manufactured using integrated circuit technology that require no moving parts. When SSDs were new in the market, they were quite expensive and the storage capacities were only in the megabytes range. They also suffered reliability issues and have a limitation on how many times write operations can be done on each memory cell. The current capabilities of manufacturers such as Samsung have lowered the cost of SSDs, improved its reliability and greatly increased the capacity. Currently, 4TB capacity SSDs are already available, although the commonly available capacities would range from 128GB to 512GB. Most computers would have significant performance improvement just by replacing the HDD with an SSD. Samsung recently announced its latest SSD technology which has an I/O speed of 2.15GB per second while using very little power. Imagine data on a single DVD being copied on an SSD in about 2 seconds. It is that fast. Because of the very low power consumption, mobile devices would definitely benefit and allow more battery life. Cloud computing service providers are offering SSDs on its virtual private servers which has...

Catigbian resolves timberland issue over barangay Maitum

DARKNESS eases out of Barangay Maitum in Catigbian when dialog diffused a potential governance headache here. Long believed as an incendiary that help spark the avid support to the communist, the situation could not just be left unattended, says Catigbian Mayor Roberto Salinas. Maitum, an agricultural barangay sliced off from a forest, owns 638.8 hectares all classified timberland based on the 1928 survey. Being timberlands, farmers eversince could not own lands as this is technically government property. The implications are unthinkable, says Mayor Roberto Salinas, hinting that everyone here is illegally settling and harvesting their planted trees on government lands can get them to jail. “The thing is, we have problems collecting real estate and property tax from the people as the lands they settle in, are technically not theirs” bemoaned Salinas. On his last term, Salinas has since attempted to remedy the situation by reclassification of timberlands into alienable and disposable (A and D) lands. This allows the process of claiming ownership to proceed. After several attempts, the retired navy captain turned mayor finally succeeded in facilitating a dialog among residents and authorities from the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR), Agrarian Reform (DAR) and local concerned agencies and offices last August 17, 2010. That day, at the Maitum Barnagy Hall, DENR 7 Regional Director V11 Leonardo Sibaluca, Regional Technical Director (RTD) for Forest Management Service Isabelo Montejo, RTD for Land Management Service Diana Apistar, and DAR RD Rudy Inson, Capitol Consultant Isabelito Tongco, PENRO Nestor Canda, CENRO Eusalem Quiwag, BEMO’s Nunilo La Fuente, DAR Bohol’s Operations chief Ronald Pumatong and Catigbian officials led by Salinas, Vice...

Training for jobs still Tops Chatto priority

JOBS and work-trainings for youths remain one of the top priorities for the Chatto Administration. At the recent Kita ug ang Gobernador weekly radio program aired over Bohol AM stations form the People’s Mansion, Governor Edgar Chatto bared a hurting statistic, only 40% of secondary students in Bohol can proceed to college. As Chatto read the statistics, he also remarked on the dire necessity to look into the matter of basic work training to high school students. Who takes care of the remaining 60% graduates who could not go to college and are not trained for jobs? Chatto asked. Over this, to arrest the need to get the 60% secondary school graduates get jobs, both Chatto and Bohol Technical Education and Skills Development Authority (TESDA) through Dr. Francisca Opog bared their continued implementation of the programs that assure work for Boholano youth. Dr. Opog said they are opening up P1M school for work training programs scholarship to employable youth aged 18 years old and older. On the other hand, Chatto revealed that Capitol intends to continue with the Skills Training Advocating Reliance and Self employment (STARS) a program co funded by the Capitol. The program identifies at least two skills training beneficiaries from every barangay in Bohol for 12 different skills from every barangay. The project, as conceptualized by the Bohol Chamber of Commerce and Industry aims to generate as much as 26,616 jobs in its first two years of inception also would hopefully start some P204M income opportunities for Bohol, then explained past president Norris Joseph Oculam. Then funded by the President’s Social Fund, Capitol put in P6.5M...
