Police adopt parameters for antidrug enforcement teams

TAGBILARAN CITY, March 9 (PIA)—They are back, and while there are stricter parameters for police participation in the government’s anti drug campaign, they come in with a new tenacity. Now reinforced with the 64 newly graduated members of the Police and the military’s Special Weapons And Tactics (SWAT), the Philippine National Police again rejoins the fray with a resolve: erase the vile left by rogue cops using the drug raids to mask their corruption. PNP Central Visayas Chief PCSuperintendent Noli Taliño told media that when the police rejoin the anti-drug campaign, those involved would he a team of disciplined and police with a good track service record. This as the police resume their tasks in the anti illegal drugs campaign with the return of Oplan Double Barrel Alpha Reloaded. “Unlike then, not all the police in the force can now join the drive,” General Taliño bared during the recent turn-over of the P4.87 million modern police station in Cortes. Even Department of Interior and Local Government (DILG) Secretary Mike Sueño admitted that when the government started the anti drugs drive, they just accepted those who volunteered, without going for a background investigation. “That is where we allowed the bad elements to contaminate the program, Sueño candidly admitted during a forum with barangay chairmen in Bohol last month. Determined not to fall into that same trap, the PNP organization firms up the national Drug Enforcement Unit, PCSupt Taliño, upon which his office also draws guidance from the DILG during operations. The provinces also form their Provincial Drug Enforcement Team (DET), and so would the towns firm up their Municipal DETs,... read more

ARIS Health gives islanders sea ferry, hospital services

By JUNE S. BLANCO IF MOHAMMED won’t come to the mountain, the mountain must come to Mohammed. Rep. Erico Aristotle Aumentado of Bohol’s 2nd District made this resolve when, on his island sorties on inspection trips on the progress of implementation of his infrastructure projects built with counter-parting funds, he noticed several children and pregnant women needing medical attention. This led to the launching on Friday, Sept. 8, of the A.R.I.S. Health or the Active and Responsive Initiative for Sustainable Health. The parents and elders told Aumentado that while they needed treatment, they could not afford the trip to the mainland to seek medical help. This prompted Aumentado to mobilize the sea ambulance procured for the District by his namesake father and immediate congressional predecessor former Governor and Congressman Erico Boyles Aumentado. After ascertaining that the vessel was seaworthy, the solon organized a trip for around 100 mostly children and their mothers from Malingin Island of Bien Unido town to the Don Emilio del Valle Memorial Hospital (DEDVMH) in Ubay town. Aumentado said bringing a team of doctors, medicines and equipment to the island would be personnel and labor intensive. This would also require off-duty staff to render overtime services because on duty staff need to man the hospital at all times. The solon expressed apprehension that the staff who just came off duty and required to render services for the mission will be exhausted when it will be time for their hospital duty again. He said tired staff are prone to human errors that might endanger the lives of hospital patients. The Malingin islanders rode the sea ambulance...

Social mobilization, innovations Pressed strategies against TB

SLOWLY moving out of the World Health Organization tuberculosis (TB) watch-list, the Philippines continues to find innovations to attain the commitment to cut the coughing scare into half this year. With 2010 as the halfway mark for the global plan to stop TB in 2015 as a commitment to the millennium development goals, health authorities during the World TB Day commemoration in Bohol resound the call for partnerships with sectors and forge alliances to accelerate the action. The activity, brought by Provincial Council Against Tuberculosis (ProCAT) “is one of the strategies we make to widen the awareness of the alarming disease that goes beyond being a health concern to economic in nature,” points out Dr. Jude Doblas. TB is hitting men in their most productive ages, agrees Imelda Ochavillo, who coordinates the Social Mobilization on Tuberculosis (SMT) project of the a civil society group present in Bohol. In fact, during the TB Forum at the BQ Atrium March 24, resource persons composed of a doctor, a nurse, a representative from the National TB Control Program, an NGO and a volunteer all agree that social mobilization can beat time in the fight against tubercle bacillus. “There is a rather strong need for social mobilization and relentless seeking for innovations to dent on TB, impresses Ochavillo who directs World Vision Development Foundation’s SMT project, and one of the forum convenors. Despite an upgraded ranking from seventh to ninth in the new World Health Organization TB watchlist, the country remains to be one of the “22 high-burdened” countries in the list, the Department of Health revealed. TB is still the sixth leading...
