DTI CHIEF TO ENTREPS: GO DIGITAL

Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) Secretary Ramon Lopez has called for digital empowerment in the Philippines to continue fueling the development of the country’s digital commerce or e-commerce, a key priority in the current trade agenda. “I urge our micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs) to welcome digital integration,” said Sec. Lopez, adding that now is the perfect timing to rally towards digital empowerment as the Philippine economy experiences strong macro-economic fundamentals, renewed investor confidence and good governance During the recent office opening of Google in Taguig, the trade chief said that “digital integration is a great equalizer, as it allows MSMEs to gather product ideas and concepts, do market tests and do promotions and selling at practically no cost.” He also said that MSMEs can make use of programs in partnership with companies like Google, so that the sector “can take advantage of opportunities that go with going digital. With vast interest infused in the demography of the Philippines as the world’s social media capital and with 50 million Internet users, accounting for 50% of the country’s total population today, the Philippines can be a model country for digital empowerment, according to him. “I hope that more effective web services, improved search experience and effective advertising platform will be delivered to all stakeholders. With Google officially in the country, we can only expect production of meaningful local contents,” he added. Citing Statista, it is projected that by 2021, 81% of the country’s population will be Internet users. BPPO tops Central Visayas Firearms control program

BOHOL Provincial Police Office (BPPO) accounted a total of 1096 fire-arms in its drives since August to September to top all the regional police offices in the implementation of the National Firearms Control Program (NFCP) or Bilang Boga, data from the Central Visayas Regional Police Office revealed. Meanwhile Cebu Provincial Police Office beat BPPO in active anti-illegal firearms interdiction operations or operation Kontra Boga net when it accounted for 433 in the last four months of operations. Operations Bilang Boga and Kontra Boga are active police operations to account and recover the estimated forty nine thousand one hundred thirty six loose firearms in line with the NFCP. It also brought down the final gun registration and licensing amnesty to advance the government’s desire to get loose firearms which often end up being used in criminal activities. The number for BPPO was 25.90 percent of the estimated 4,232 loose firearms from threat groups and criminal elements or those basically un-renewed in the last years, explains PInspector John Gano, Camp Dagohoy Information Officer. While topping the charts in Bilang Boga operations, or accounting for the loose firearms, Bohol garnered third place in the operation Kontra Boga or the anti-loose fire-arms interdiction operations BPPO police operatives only accounted 44 firearms during the same period. Over the achievement, outgoing police director PSsupt Edgardo Ingking said he was just happy that his men delivered and seriously cascaded the national gun amnesty campaign in their areas....

Best nutri programs reap awards, Dec 9

FOR their key roles in advancing nutrition consciousness and elevating the health conditions of Boholanos, nutrition advocates get the lime light this December 9, 2009 as attentions is drawn to the annual awarding ceremonies at the Jjs Seafoods Restaurant.   Provincial Nutrition Council Chairman Governor Erico Aumentado bares this during the recent council meeting held at the Capitol last week.   Governor Aumentado, who has been equally concerned about the nutrition condition of Bohol’s young generation also shared his serious commitment of helping the government eradicate all forms of deprivation including that of hunger in line with the national Accelerated anti-Hunger Mitigation Program (AHMP).   In the country’s last quarter of 2008 hunger incidence survey, from a record high 4.3 million families, hunger incidence drastically dipped to 2.9 million families after the government initiated serious mitigation programs.   Now engaging communities to participate in the efforts to carve a chunk of the poverty and hunger incidences, the Council, through the governor said the awardees have complemented the national and provincial government efforts, and it should be recognized.   With Bohol bagging the Consistent Regional Outstanding Winner in Nutrition (CROWN) in the last consecutive years, nutrition advocates in the council believe that the awarding further motivates the people to do some more in line with the agenda.   Leading this year’s nutrition awardees are ten of Bohol towns who have been topping the list of best performing municipal nutrition councils.   They are Tubigon, Garcia Hernandez, Panglao, Mabini, Catigbian, Trinidad, San Miguel, Antequera, Ubay and Candijay.    Towns which have consistently maintained their nutrition programs are Talibon, Inabanga and Getafe,...

Catigbian passes measure on Socialized medicare services

CATIGBIAN town puts in another innovation worth replicating by local government units: a socialized health service incorporated in a local system called the yellow card.   By passing Municipal Ordinance Number 6, series of 2009, the town has also successfully institutionalized a program that has become prime tool for some local chief executives who want a sole credit making it appear that he is using his own money to aid his constituents.   We need to put up a measure that would stop future leaders from appointing his political supporters as beneficiaries, all to the disadvantage of those seriously needing the help, Mayor Roberto Salinas stressed.   The Yellow Card Ordinance is our humble way of providing the best health care and at the same time sustain the operations of the new Municipal Health Center and Lying in Clinic, Salinas said.   But considering that we have indigent constituents who would also need to avail of its offered basic medical and health services, we need to identify who these people that the town’s meager health aid fund can help, the retired navy captain now steering an agricultural town to its loftiest development record explained.   Even if out 1,151 indigents of the town can availed of the PhilHealth Out-patient benefit package while some 4,094 households can avail of the free medical services while enrolled in the government socialized medical benefit program, there is a rather huge need to serve those who still could not avail of the same benefits, he claimed.   He said the yellow card ordinance defines those indigents and issue to the household head the card...

PVET reports zero rabies case in ’09

TWO and a half years after implementing a program in 2007 to make Bohol rabies free in 2010, authorities have seen very significant achievements. “But that is not where it ends”, hints Provincial veterinarian Dr. Stella Marie Lapiz. “We can not claim yet that we are rabies free,” underscoring that a lot of work needs to be done. The aim to eradicate rabies in Bohol seemed impossible especially when the province topped the national rabies watch-list in 2007, dragging the entire region with it, points Dr. Lapiz. Wanting to plant the tourism destination flag in the country just does not go well with the reports that a widely preventable rabies with its teeth bared lurking in the corner, reiterates a member of the multi-sectoral Bohol Rabies Prevention and Eradication Council (BRPEC), in a separate talk. “We have accomplished the target of vaccinating 70% of our dog population during our second round of inoculations, but we still have to see the results” Dr, Lapiz explains during the weekly The Governor Reports. 70% of dog population vaccinated is a universally pegged safe standard, but it is not acceptable for Bohol authorities who want a full assurance that rabies has become a non-threat. Thanking the popular support of local governments, animal and livestock technicians and barangay livestock workers, pet owners and international funding agencies, Dr. Lapiz reported that the concerted efforts has made Bohol without a rabies case to worry to date. Dr. Lapiz said Bohol has tested negative despite the 49 dog head samples sent to the regional laboratories for rabies examination. There has never been reported human rabies too, she...

“Mal-nutrition mitigation” in for 3 towns, says PNC

THREE Bohol towns would be piloted for a focused approach on mal-nutrition mitigation, the Provincial Nutrition Council (PNC) said recently.   The underweight children of Cortes, Dagohoy and Anda towns now get to benefit from government assisted activities targeted to drastically address the problem.   The PNC selected the towns; one per congressional district based on the number of underweight children from preschool to elementary ages, explained Dr. Reymoses Cabagnot.   Data from the council showed that the same towns own the most number of underweight children in their respective districts.   PNC vice chairman Dr. Cabagnot stressed that if the problem is not addressed as soon, the problem of children suffering from malnutrition may regress to poor scholastic performance, low body resistance leading to decreased productivity.   Cortes has 262, Dagohoy; 478 and Anda has 268 children needing immediate nutrition supplementation efforts.   With the issue, PNC Chairman Governor Erico Aumentado vowed he would put in more funds in 2010, this coming from the Provincial Development Funds upon seeing the dire need to augment logistical support for the agenda.   For the three towns, the council has identified a program of enhanced rehabilitation of indentified underweight children through organized community efforts.   The program also engages communities, government agencies concerned and sectors to zoom in on nutrition education programs through a unique system anchored at the schools through the Department of Education called pabasa sa Nutrisyon.   The Department of Agriculture would also be engaging communities through food production program via its popular “Food Always In The Home” coupled with enhanced food supplementation through Feeding activities in children,...
