Bohol, Naga, Davao pilots in connectivity

By JUNE S. BLANCO     FORTY national government agencies in one-stop shops in Ubay and Talibon towns? Rep. Erico Aristotle Aumentado (Bohol, 2nd District), chair of the House Committee on Science and Technology said the idea is not far-fetched. This after Bohol in the Visayas, Naga in Luzon and Davao in Mindanao will be piloted for the first ever satellite-based internet connectivity project. Aumentado said the project augurs well for a stable connection so that Ubay and Talibon as well as their counterpart towns in Luzon and Mindanao may soon set up these one-stop shops initially with These will spell savings for residents in these and nearby towns as they may just go to these shops to secure clearances and transact businesses with the National Bureau of Investigation (NBI), Department of Trade and Industry, Social Security System and the like – for an initial 20 agencies. Aumentado said Ubay and Talibon still has poor connectivity hence he pushed for the inclusion of these towns as project pilots. Ubay and Talibon, he said, are the most populous towns in Bohol. Both have seaports while Ubay has an airport. This spells booming business for both towns although at times, he said, the connectivity is poor. “That is why Ubay and Talibon should get the first crack at better connectivity,” he explained. This will give Bohol a competitive edge in the wake of the Asean integration, he said. It is about time that Ubay should level up its business climate. With reliable internet, suppliers can find clients and buyers can find suppliers. Since both parties are working from their... read more

Aris bullish on waste-to-energy

By JUNE S. BLANCO   REP. Erico Aristotle Aumentado of Bohol’s 2nd District is bullish on producing energy from residual waste. He met last week with a waste-to-energy expert to discuss where and how his constituency can participate. Aumentado said waste-to-energy calls for the segregation of waste. Biodegradable waste can be fodder for biomass energy, or at least, can be turned into organic fertilizer. But, the solon quoted the expert, residuals can be turned into energy as well. This, the solon said, is where his constituents can be motivated to better implemented Republic Act No. 9003 or the Ecological Solid Waste Management (ESWM) Act. Waste-to-energy is a two-pronged approach to contribute to mitigating climate change, he explained. On top of pushing for zero waste at the household level, turning residuals to power means less bulk for landfills, savings in tipping fees and contribution to the longer lifespans of sanitary landfills. The solon noted that once landfills are filled to capacity, a local government unit (LGU) operating it must look for another site to contain residual waste. Bohol may be the country’s tenth largest island, but it does not have the luxury of space. Aumentado said Bohol is basically agricultural and ecological. In order to feed the people, landfills and space-intensive solar panels must not compete for space with agricultural lands and the imperative forest cover. After all, he said, agriculture and tourism are the province’s economic drivers. Power generated from residuals, the solon said, will also be the 2nd District’s contribution to locally-generated energy. Aumentado pointed out that only the power industry approves of, and even requires redundancy. This...

Police cast last chance to register loose guns

LAST chance for gun-owners who want to be legal in their fire-arms possession.   Camp Dagohoy police authorities throw the final lifeline before they go aggressive in interdiction operations, says PSSupt. Edgardo Ingking during a radio interview recently.    His call was a reiteration of the urging of Police Regional Director Lane ‘O Neres who has in his shoulders the responsibility to account for the loose and unregistered firearms in Central Visayas.   Failure to take the last chance may mean they would expect authorities to throw at them the book and that they are prepared to face the consequences of the law.   Illegal possession of fire-arms carry a year to 12 years imprisonment, according to applicable laws.   According to Ingking, anybody who avails of the final amnesty can get condonation of penalties and surcharges in as much as the amnesty makes things easy for those wanting to have their guns registered.   The national gun-amnesty runs from October 1-31, while processing has started since August.   PCSupt Neres stressed during a radio interview that most of the loose fire-arms are used in criminal activities, and by the President’s issuance of Executive Order 187, police authorities finally open the final amnesty.   Interested persons can apply for the amnesty by visiting the nearest police processing offices for fire-arms data verification and the issuance of application and permit to transport.   Then the applicant submits the accomplished forms and complies with the requirements.   When this is approved, this also acts as his permit to transport the weapon for ballistics testing upon his payment of fees.   Upon...

IF plans do not miscarry, Cortesanons would have a brief preview of the dance drama of epic tale Wadje, fully performed by amateur Cortesanon artists from the town’s riverside barangays.   Set for a minor launch this October 17 and a repeat performance for October 21, Cortes Foundation Day, the dance drama entitled Wadje sa Abatan sa mga Panghitabo would showcase debuting local artists retelling the handed oral traditions about the famed lady warrior Wadje.   Early this year, the National Commission for Culture and Arts tasked Drama Committee Chair and Boholano multi-awarded artist tasked Lutgardo Labad to study the possibility of a cultural shows complementing Abatan Community Tours.   With a trigger fund from the government through House Committee on Tourism Chair Edgar Chatto and from PROCESS Bohol’s interest in complementing the community tours, executive director Emilia Roslinda initiated the first coordination meetings toward the goal.   Lucky for Cortes, a Cortesanon theater artist and New York based stage director Lorely Garrote-Trinidad, local artists Blair Panong, Sebastian Ocon, Phillip Panong, Rey Anthony Chiu, grounding research for a workable script first started April this year.   Months later, after interviews and research, the frail but epic character of Wadje was a common thread for local lores about the place.   Prodding open the oral memories handed from generations, researchers unearthed the buried tale of Wadje and husband Mag-ile, warriors of Sacsac.   The tale was all too colourful not to be noticed.   The sketchy storyline patched from oral traditions. folk tales and a little persistent archaeological venture grounded the story about Wadje’s transformation from a submissive wife to...

THE call to help typhoon stricken communities in Metro Manila and nearby provinces resound in Bohol as government and the civil society launch massive relief drives for the purpose.   Governor Erico Aumentado, who initially gave P200,000 for relief has also designated the office of the Provincial Social Welfare and Development (OPSWD) as the relief hub for all government sourced donations.   Unconfirmed sources added that donations collected here would be sent directly to the National Relief Operations Center in Malacanang prior to its distribution to stricken communities in manila and nearby flooded provinces.   After the massive flooding that submerged most parts of Metro Manila, President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo has temporarily converted Malacanang as national relief operations center early this week.   The move was made to augment the relief operations of the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) for the typhoon victims, reports said.   Here in Bohol, radio station DyRD / Bohol Chronicle launched with the Diocese of Tagbilaran its own fund and relief goods raising for victims of storm Ondoy.   Immediately after Bishop Leonardo Medroso appealed for support on the air, donations flooded and calls for cash pledges swarmed the lines.   To maximize on the efforts, sources said Rev Fr. Warli Salise of the Bohol Social Action Center is now coordinating with the parishes to gather all donations before it could be simultaneously sent to Manila Thursday next week.   Reports have also conformed that the initial donations would be shipped to Manila, care of Negros Navigation.   But with the apparent immediate need of dry clothing and other usable stuff, the country’s...
