Mahanay energized, more islands to follow

By JUNE S. BLANCO JANUARY 7 will forever be etched in the minds of the over 700 households in the three-barangay island of Mahanay off Getafe and Talibon towns. This after Rep. Erico Aristotle Aumentado (Bohol, 2nd District) yesterday powered on the ceremonial switch for the P30-million energization project for the island. Engr. Eugene Tan, manager of the Bohol II Electric Cooperative Inc. (Boheco II) assisted him. In his switch-on message, Aumentado waxed sentimental as he declared the fulfillment of the promise his namesake father and immediate congressional predecessor, former Gov. Erico Boyles Aumentado, made to the islanders. Patterned after the Leyte-Bohol Interconnection project, Mahanay taps power from mainland Bohol through submarine cables. The National Electrification Administration (NEA through then Administrator Edita Bueno downloaded the amount to Boheco II that undertook the bidding process for the cable and installed it, along with the electric poles, power main and lateral lines. Boheco II will manage the power distribution to the households as well. The elder Aumentado had broached the energization plan for the 2nd District’s 35 islands and islets to Bueno. With the technology already available, it did not take him long to convince her. However, death overtook him on Christmas Day of 2012, and in the midst of his campaign for reelection as congressman. He was into his first term on his second stint. Before that, he completed an unprecedented three terms as governor of Bohol. Prior to that, he was congressman also for three terms. Aumentado, the son, picked up the pieces where his father left off. In 2015, his own first term as congressman, he brought to... read more

PH cites benefits of WTO Information Technology Agreement

The Philippines, through Department of Trade and Industry’s Board of Investments (BOI) Governor Lucita Reyes, Semiconductor and Electronics Industries in the Philippines (SEIPI) President Danilo Lachica and Ionics Vice-President for Operations Mr. Jay Chavez, recently participated at the celebration of World Trade Organization’s 20th Information Technology Agreement (ITA) Symposium held on 27-28 June in Geneva, Switzerland.   According to Magnolia Uy, DTI Philippine Trade and Investment Center in Geneva (PTIC-Geneva), the event allowed for the member countries to highlight ITA’s role of providing households and domestic businesses access to more affordable and higher-quality Information and Communication Technologies (ICTs) through tariffs elimination on hundreds of ICT products.   The Philippines, as one of the 82 signatories of ITA, has benefited from the initial ITA signed in 1996 and its expansion of list in 2015. According to the Philippines’ chief ITA negotiator and Board of Investment Governor Lucita Reyes, the country’s ITA membership helped lower prices for key ICT hardware inputs that the BPO industry depends upon. At present, the country’s ICT services exports account for roughly 70% of total services exports while the ICT goods exports account for more than 35% of total exported goods.   In terms of ICT goods exports, Lachica added that the Philippine semiconductor and electronics industry continues to grow at a steady rate, ranking as the 17th largest exporter of ICT products in the world valued at approximately USD 24 billion (out of USD 29 billion total electronics exports).   However, according to Ionics Vice-President for Operations Jay Chavez, to sustain the demand of ICT services enterprises for ICT products, it is imperative for the Philippines to move...

Tourism in CV not affected by crisis

NOT really spared from the adverse effects of the global financial crisis, the Central Visayas economic performance slowed down following a holding back stance until the economy starts to bounce.   But according to the Regional Development Council in its Full Council Meeting held Friday at the posh Bohol Tropics Resort here, tourism, one of Visayas’ major economic drivers remained vibrant.   The vibrant status can be gleaned from visitor arrival data in the fourth quarter of 2008 which exceeded last year’s level by 9.6%, the RDC briefing notes reveal.   The continued influx of foreign travelers coming to the region despite the recession in the United States and other major economies has been the main reason why the region squeezed a double digit increase in foreign visitor arrivals.   In fact, observers have noted that a large bulk of foreign arrivals visiting the region were balikbayan homing for the holidays and the festivals in the region in the first quarter of the new year.   For foreign travelers, Koreans still remain to be on top comprising more than one-fourth of the total foreign visitors in the region. Japanese ranked next with about 18%.   Chinese tourists, perhaps owing to the travel campaigns made by local officials to China have doubled their arrivals since fourth quarter of 2007.   In domestic travel, the market showed a slow-down from its previous year’s high double-digit performance of 12.5% in the fourth quarter of 2007 to 8.1% in 2008.   In Bohol, from 54,915 tourists in 2006, it went up to 62.033 in 2007 and then rose to 71,366 to an annual...

PGMA: Bohol emerges as a promising province

Bohol has now become a middle class province that continues to develop to perhaps becoming one of the richest provinces nationwide. It is now hailed as the model province for peace and tourism growth. A far cry in 2001 when it was identified as one of the top 10 poorest provinces in the country. President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo said this during Bohol’s 155th Foundation Day celebration where she was the guest of honor. Arroyo said when she first came into power in 2001, Bohol was one of the top 10 poorest provinces nationwide primarily due to the problem of insurgency that has prevented the province from making economic headway. The President then cited Gov. Erico Aumentado’s efforts to ensure that basic services trickle down to the grassroots level in order to cut the chain of poverty and rebellion that have haunted the province for decades. In 2005, the province of Bohol has been freed from the problem of insurgency and peace followed immediately after that led to the steady growth of progress which up to now continues to spread, according to Pres. Arroyo. The President also said Bohol is the role model of peace and development as programs implemented by the Kalayaan Barangay Programs (KBP) in conflict areas is patterned after the peace advocacy programs of Bohol.
