FilAm Timex Bohol winner Banners PH in GFNYBohol

A Filipino American triathlete who ruled the previous Timex triathlon here is among the big names the country is looking at, as the Gran Fondo New York (GFNY) opens its inaugural Philippine qualifiers to the New York Cycling Marathon in Bohol January 27. ArlandMacasieb, elite triathlete based in New Jersey along with a good number of promising Filipino speedsters on pedals and Lycra, would be bringing the name of the Philippines as the locals crank it out against 400 other cyclists from 14 countries joining the inaugural mass start GFNY race from the Pavillion of the Bellevue Hotel in Panglao and off to mainland Bohol. Already rated as among the region’s international greats, Macasieb and a horde of local cyclists can only use the familiarity of the course as their ace on the sleeves, as the best of the best GFNY races in the region have descended here to take a spin at that prestigious front corral in the GFNY world event in May. Macasieb who has been competing internationally, however, is coming to Bohol with a new excitement: to realize the goal of bringing the international GFNY brand to the Philippines. Macasieb said the green and GFNY black jerseys are ubiquitous in the NYC area and I know the GFNY series is global with events in our neighboring countries of Malaysia and Indonesia. Coming to the Philippines was the next logical step. Although admitting that bringing an inaugural event in a place would be tough, Fluhme cited the birth pangs, but nevertheless, they were still able to generate over 400 bikers from 14 countries. Basically a personal endurance... read more

Annual crime rate on downtrend at 18.33%

Bohol crime busters celebrate as they enter 2019, with a badge of 1,506 crimes less in 2018 compared to a high 8,214 in 2016. The crime dip is a 18.33% reduction from the index crime rates that Camp Francisco Dagohoycrime statisticians tracked across the three years featuring its January to December of every year. In 2016, Bohol records 2,859 index and 5,355 non index crimes to reach a yearly total of 8,214. By 2017, Bohol crime watchers noted 2,545 index crimes and 5,336 non index crimes for a total of 7,881. By 2018, index crimes noted were 1,751 across Bohol while non index crimes reached 4,957 to a sum of 6,708. From 2016 to 2017, Bohol police earned a -4.05% crime decrease, a figure which further dipped, allowing them to a 14.88% less crimes pin. The accomplishment also held true to the average monthly index crime rates which showed that in 2016, the monthly average was 17.28, which lowered to 15.38 in 2017 and further sagged to 10.58 in 2018, the Philippine National Police’s next generation investigation tracking system. The police based the crime tracking from the entries in their enhanced e-Blotter or Crime Information Reporting and Analysis System (CIRAS); Case Information Database Management System (CIDMS); Case Management and Analysis System (CMAS); e- Subpoena System; e-Rogues Gallery and, e-Warrant System. In fact, in the last three years, police crime fighting largely dented so much on its focused crimes, which marred crime records in the past years. In the focused crimes, theft, which soared to 1291 in 2016 sagged to just 736 in 2018, while physical injuries which had 683... read more

Lower House Oks space agency bill

By JUNE S. BLANCO THE Philippines has taken another giant step towards the realization of creating its own space agency. This after the Lower House this week passed on third and final reading House Bill No. 8541 – the Philippine Space Development Act. Science and Technology Committee Chair and main author Rep. Erico Aristotle Aumentado (Bohol 2nd District) and co-authors led by Rep. Seth Frederick Jalosjos (Zamboanga del Norte, 1st District) had pushed for the creation of the Philippine Space Agency (Philsa) – to be under the Department of Science and Technology (DoST). Aumentado said it is high time that the Philippines upgrades its technology, to better communicate information to the people, and to better predict the weather, among others. The solon said the agency would be under the Department of Science and Technology (DOST). He said on top of information gathering, satellites can also be a peace and order tool. He said they can best be maximized in surveillance activities as they can easily track the movements of people with suspicious moves. Satellites can locate suspects with surgical accuracy, he said. Applying the satellite to the Marawi City scenario, the solon said it can trace “with pinpoint accuracy” the location of the Maute terrorists agitating a rising rebellion in Muslim Mindanao. The 297-strong Lower House had voted unanimously in favor of the bill. When created, Philsa will have its offices in the Clark Special Economic Zone, in Pampanga and Tarlac – tasked primarily with safeguarding the country/s sovereignty and territorial integrity. It will also conduct space research and development, space industry and capacity building, space education and awareness,...

From trash to treasure: An upcycling project rises in Bohol to help impoverished communities

The wallets, fans, and key holder samples were created by Rowena, Telyz, and Angelita — all members of a women’s group in Barangay Cogon in Tagbilaran, Bohol. The souvenir items were made from used plastic shopping bags and snack wrappers. The women were trained by a 27-year old Japanese volunteer Chisato Kanno dispatched under the Japan International Cooperation Agency’s (JICA) Japan Overseas Cooperation Volunteers (JOCV) Program. “Bohol has a thriving tourism industry, but waste management is a challenge. I am introducing a system to the community on recycling plastic, and creating products that they can sell for income,” said Kanno. With help from JICA, Bohol’s local government, Department of Trade and Industry (DTI), Department of Education (DepEd), and barangay Cogon, an upcycling facility project was launched in Tagbilaran, the first of its kind in the Philippines to use digital fabrication equipment. “Upcyling” is converting unwanted objects like plastics into usable ones without degrading its quality. In Tagbilaran City, about 10 tons of waste materials, particularly plastic shopping bags are discarded on average. Through upcycling, waste materials like plastic are collected then washed and cleaned. The plastic materials are cut and pressed using a machine to form new plastic sheets that are then transformed into new products. The heat press machine was designed by another Japanese volunteer dispatched in Bohol’s Department of Trade and Industry, Shiro Takaki. Takaki assembled the upcycling equipment using a previous JICA-assisted project and the country’s first fabrication laboratory in Bohol. Through the project, women of Barangay Cogon saw how trash could be redesigned to become someone else’s treasure, while helping low-income families. “My husband...

Auza.Net Offers Digital Archiving Services

Auza.Net starts to offer its Digital Archiving Service in January 2017 to organizations with large volume of documents that need to be referenced quickly.  After scanning paper documents and storing the scanned images in a digital archive, the company will then transcribe metadata of the documents and create an index.  The digital archive is then searched using a web browser and the relevant documents may be viewed on the browser or downloaded. The company already has been providing the service in previous years but only formally offered the service this month.  Currently the company is creating a digital archive for a local government agency.  The documents date as far back as the 90’s and most of these documents exist without known copies.  The agency intends to use the archive as a backup as well as an online reference. Currently the agency staff physically go through the documents in storage if they are looking for a reference.  When the digital archive is brought online, they can perform the search on the transcribed metadata and will be able to quickly find the documents they need.  In addition to their own use, the digital archive will also be accessible to the public.  This will help lessen the queue of requests to search for the documents at their office. In addition to creating the digital archive, Auza.Net also offers hosting of the digital archive for customers who do not want to invest on their own servers.   A hosted digital archive is ideal for organizations that allow access to users that are spread out geographically or if public access is allowed. It will be...

Bohol, Naga, Davao pilots in connectivity

By JUNE S. BLANCO     FORTY national government agencies in one-stop shops in Ubay and Talibon towns? Rep. Erico Aristotle Aumentado (Bohol, 2nd District), chair of the House Committee on Science and Technology said the idea is not far-fetched. This after Bohol in the Visayas, Naga in Luzon and Davao in Mindanao will be piloted for the first ever satellite-based internet connectivity project. Aumentado said the project augurs well for a stable connection so that Ubay and Talibon as well as their counterpart towns in Luzon and Mindanao may soon set up these one-stop shops initially with These will spell savings for residents in these and nearby towns as they may just go to these shops to secure clearances and transact businesses with the National Bureau of Investigation (NBI), Department of Trade and Industry, Social Security System and the like – for an initial 20 agencies. Aumentado said Ubay and Talibon still has poor connectivity hence he pushed for the inclusion of these towns as project pilots. Ubay and Talibon, he said, are the most populous towns in Bohol. Both have seaports while Ubay has an airport. This spells booming business for both towns although at times, he said, the connectivity is poor. “That is why Ubay and Talibon should get the first crack at better connectivity,” he explained. This will give Bohol a competitive edge in the wake of the Asean integration, he said. It is about time that Ubay should level up its business climate. With reliable internet, suppliers can find clients and buyers can find suppliers. Since both parties are working from their...
