NAPPING OR SLEEPING?

Just when has power-napping become one person’s problem? It only becomes one huge problem if you napped and you are Presidente Rodrigo Duterte, who happens to attend the meeting of the heads of states of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (Asean). Journalists covering the event reported that President Duterte napped and because of this, missed some of the events laid by the organizers. Expectedly, like what most people believed, this was an easy feed for those who openly criticize and wish ill to the president. First to grab the limelight is Senator Antonio Trillanes IV, who said, there are just but two reasons to this: either the president is lazy or he has problem with his health. From that, we could also see two reasons why Trillianes came to that conclusion: he refused to see anything good from President Duterte or, that has just shown the end of his thinking capacity. Other than Trillianes, we could not tell who else would say that the president is lazy. In fact, many people openly admit that, just by following through the news reports of the president’s daily itinerary, for a man of that age, it is a surprising feat that he could do all those, in a day. Baguio Mayor Mauricio Domogan for one, has said this is the first time that a president arrived within 24 hours of a tragedy. This only tells us that Trillianes was probably still sleeping when President Duterte landed amidst the wailing and the sorrow of the landslide victims’ families. Moreover, as a rebel soldier and a loudmouth which he plays to the hilt,... read more

DTI CHIEF PROMOTES ASEAN ECONOMIC INTEGRATION: JOINS ASEAN MINISTERS IN SIGNING E-COMMERCE AGREEMENT, IN ENHANCING AGREEMENTS ON SERVICES TRADE AND INVESTMENT

Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) Secretary Ramon Lopez joined other ASEAN Economic Ministers (AEM) at the Preparatory AEM Meeting and the ASEAN Economic Community (AEC) Council during 11-12 November in Singapore. In this event, the ministers signed the ASEAN E-Commerce Agreement; announced the conclusion of the negotiations for the ASEAN Trade in Services Agreement (ATISA); and finalised the Fourth Protocol to Amend the ASEAN Comprehensive Investment Agreement (ACIA). Secretary Lopez noted two major benefits from the e-commerce agreement: “It has elements that provide protection and safeguards to consumers to build trust and confidence in e-commerce. Likewise, it facilitates more MSME access to the ASEAN market.” Meanwhile, ATISA aims to deepen services sectors in ASEAN, while ACIA will help maintain the attractiveness of the region as an investment destination. “ASEAN is on the drawing board to ‘future-proof’ the regional economy,” said DTI Secretary Lopez. Among the other topics that were discussed include Global Value Chains (GVC), Innovation, Digital Economy, and 4th Industrial Revolution (4IR), among many others. “A priority in our engagement in the AEC is to pursue the agenda on Inclusive Globalization. We can use our international and regional engagements as a tool to alleviate poverty and sustain our economic growth and development,” explained Sec. Lopez. He added that ASEAN can play an important role in preserving a rules-based global trading order and provide the necessary boost to the world economy, amid the increasing threat of escalating trade tensions and continuing global... read more

Aris to seek add’l funding for brgy multipurpose bldgs in 2nd

By JUNE S. BLANCO ALL barangays in Bohol’s 2nd District will soon have a multi-purpose building each –courtesy of Rep. Erico Aristotle Aumentado. The solon said some barangays have completed theirs through this counter-parting project. However, some “poorer” barangays could not come up with their respective counterparts, leaving the project unfinished until now. Aumentado continues to make the rounds of his district for ocular inspections to assess the ongoing multipurpose building projects to determine which are not yet complete. For these, he said, he will request for additional funding at P1 million next year. Current funding, he said, is P750,000 from the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH). The multi-purpose buildings can serve as the barangay’s meeting or assembly area, or evacuation center in times of calamities. The buildings have rain water collectors. The water can then be used by the community for the building’s toilet, for their respective laundry and other water needs. Aumentado said the amount may not be that much, but he gave all the barangays in his district such funds equally for the multi-purpose buildings not considering if he won or lost in that barangay in the last elections. He emphasized that he does not want to give just a few barangays from two to three million pesos if this means sacrificing the needs ofd the other barangays. He wants all barangays to receive equal amounts. The solon said after the election results are out, he always puts politics behind. This is most effective, he said, to heal “election wounds”. His unprecedented zero dissatisfaction rating in the latest round of Bohol Polls conducted by...

Credit, ATM card fraud operates in Bohol -NBI

TAGBILARAN CITY, December 28 (PIA)–—The season of bonuses and extra cash is also the season for the frauds, and anti-crime authorities warn: always be aware of your credit card and Automated Teller Machine (ATM) cards transactions. No less than National Bureau of Investigations Bohol executive Officer Atty Arcelito Albao issued the warning after the agency has allegedly tracked credit cards and ATM card fraud. At the Provincial Peace and Order Council Meeting recently at the Conference Hall of the Governor’s Mansion, Atty Albao bared of the presence of card data skimming fraudsters in Bohol now. The modus is for these people to work with tellers or point of sale swipe stations and transfer the data from the card to a remote server which copies the details of the account. Or, a data skimming device is attached to an ATM machine card slot, and as soon as a card is inserted and the account holder keys in the personal identification number, the skimming device activates and duplicates the account information into a nearby computer. The fraud does not happen right there and then, but takes a few more hours after the remote computer can create a duplicate bogus account and card which the fraudster uses to debit money, pay for online transactions and withdraw amounts from the cloned account. Over this, former Tagbilaran City police chief Colonel George Vale advised customers and card holders: do not ever lose visual contact of your cards. Earlier, a high end resort manager has raised a red-flag over debit transactions using spurious cards. At a separate PPOC meeting, the manager narrated that somebody booked...

IBP Bohol assures non-tolerance to member’s drug -involvement

TAGBILARAN CITY, December 12 (PIA)–Following allegations of some lawyers’ links with drugs, the Integrated Bar of the Philippines, (IBP) Bohol Chapter in a statement, assured they will not tolerate any member’s involvement in illegal drug trade. Through a public statement posted in his facebook account, Bohol IBP President Atty. Teodoro Lagang on Tuesday evening stressed: If anyone in our ranks is proven to be involved in the illegal drug trade, then we will be the first to denounce him or her. As its commitment to the fight against drugs, the IBP Bohol has been conducting seminars to law enforcement officers to enhance their legal knowledge and help them be more effective in the fight against illegal drugs. “The IBP Bohol Chapter, through the LAELEP Program, has also been extending free legal assistance to our law enforcers who have cases filed against them in connection with the performance of their duties,” IBP said. Through the Legal Assistance for Effective Law Enforcement Program (LAELEP), the IBP has also been extending free legal assistance to law enforcers who gain counter-suits while in the performance of their duties.
