Palace says gov’t. to enforce the law in response to fighting in Sulu bet. MNLF & ASG

THE government will enforce the law once civilians affected by the ongoing fighting between and Moro National Liberation Front (MNLF) and Abu Sayyaf Group (ASG) have been secured, a Palace official said on Friday. Presidential Communications Development and Strategic Planning Office Secretary Ramon Carandang said that aside from removing the civilians from harm’s way the military is also working to contain the conflict in Sulu. The MNLF, which forged a peace deal with the government in 1996, has to explain later on its recent actions against the Abu Sayyaf, Carandang said. “Everybody has to follow the law and the law will be enforced but, as I said yesterday, what’s the most important thing right now is for us to ensure the safety of the civilians,” he said in a press briefing in Malacanang on Friday. Asked by reporters if the MNLF should have coordinated with the military in launching its attack against the Abu Sayyaf, Carandang said, the President didn’t sanction MNLF’s Sulu operations. “As the President said, that’s not sanctioned. So we just need to wait until the first priority has been dealt with before we deal with other things,” the Palace official said, adding that government’s major concern is the safety of civilians in the conflict area. The military said it would deploy troops in areas in Sulu to contain the fighting. Reports said eight MNLF fighters were killed and beheaded by the Abu Sayyaf Group, while 18 of the bandits were confirmed dead in the fighting that started Saturday.... read more

THE Aquino government is set to launch on Monday a socio-economic initiative dubbed “Sajahatra Bangsamoro” aimed at uplifting the health, education and livelihood conditions of the Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF) communities, a Palace official said. In line with President Benigno S. The national government will take the lead in the ceremonial launch of the program to be held at the Bangsamoro Leadership and Management Institute compound in Sultan Kudarat town in Maguindanao. Almendras said the Sajahatra Bangsamoro will focus on health, education and livelihood services that will be done through an-inter-agency mechanism. “These will include provision of health insurance by the Philippine Health Insurance Corporation (PhilHealth); upgrading of community-based health services by the Department of Health (DOH); provision of college scholarships and technical-vocational training by the Commission on Higher Education (CHED) and Technical Education and Skills Development Authority (TESDA), respectively; educational assistance to madaris (Islamic schools) and private schools by the Department of Education, needs assessment of selected Bangsamoro communities; Cash for Work Program, through the Department of Social Welfare and Development, among others,” Almendras... read more

PPM brought services, carabaos to Cabayugan

CABAYUGAN, Calape – The seven puroks in this hinterland barangay of Calape were the recent beneficiaries of healthy female carabaos which the farmer-beneficiaries greatly welcomed to support their livelihood thru farming. The carabao dispersal was made possible thru the Countryside Development Program-Purok Power Movement (CDP-PPM) of the provincial government of Bohol. Gov. Edgar Chatto personally turned over the seven carabaos to the barangay officials then to the purok leaders-beneficiaries during the recent mini agri-HEAT caravan, medical and dental outreach at said barangay. Brgy Capt. Juanita Carajay was profuse in her thanks to the governor for the PPM’s presence in her barangay saying that a lot has improved in their area since the PPM came. And this caravan and outreach is just one tangible proof of the promise of the provincial government that services and development will be brought to the front yard of every barangay to help the constituents achieve the socio-economic development, which is also the main thrust of the CDP-PPM. But one long-term support the PPM brought to the barangay are the capacity development for its constituents down to the purok and sitios that empowers them to be better leaders through the purok sectoral working committees (SWCs). Gov. Chatto, in his message said that one clear proof that a purok or sitio is capacitated and empowered and is united is just by looking at its purok centers. The structure may be modest but if it is strong and not reclining or tilting, clean and not unkempt and with bulletin or information boards present, it means the people in the purok gets to meet often and discuss about...
