In its effort to fully participate in the global Halal market, the Department of Trade and Industry is assisting twenty-three (23) Philippine companies in showcasing the best of Philippine food products under the FoodPhilippines country pavilion at the 23rd edition of Gulfood or the Gulf Food Hotel and Equipment Exhibition and Salon Culinaire at Sheikh Rashid Hall in the Dubai World Trade Center, United Arab Emirates (UAE) happening on 18 to 21 February 2018. With FoodPhilippines’ participation in the Gulfood 2018, DTI-CITEM is looking to rake in at least US$110-million export deals. Locals, visitors, and trade buyers from Muslim-dominated nations such as the Saudi Arabia, United Arab Emirates (UAE), Qatar, Kuwait, Oman and Bahrain that are all part of the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) are expected to visit the said trade event. DA funds molecular lab in support of Bohol’s bid as Phil dairy capital

TAGBILARAN CITY, February 6 (PIA)–The Department of Agriculture (DA) is funding the construction and operation of a genetic molecular laboratory here in Bohol, at the Ubay Stock Farm (USF) in Ubay town.   Agriculture secretary Emmanuel Piñol revealed this as he explained the new direction in the country’s livestock dispersal program during this term, during his first official visit to Bohol January 26.   Speaking before a gathering of dairy industry stakeholder members of the Bohol Dairy Producers Association (BODPA), the Cebuano speaking secretary explained that the molecular laboratory is a long overdue support for the region’s livestock industry.   The molecular laboratory is a research and development facility which will be the center of a wide variety of scientific research in multiple disciplines in cattle and carabao breeding and genetics, biotechnology, nutrition and forage or pasture, animal health, reproductive physiology, management, product development as well as socio-economics and setting policy directions to the country’s livestock industry. The DA, which is facilitating the entry into the country of some 5,000 heads of girolando cattle breeds here would largely be using artificial insemination (AI) and genetic engineering to make sure the succeeding calves bred would retain if not enhance the local dairy production as envisioned by the government as better breeds. AI is basically a reproductive tool which harnesses the potential of outstanding males or sires. Girolando, according to Pinol is a Brazilian accidental bred when a Holcein jumped off the coral and bred with a Gir, which produced a girolando offspring that increased the breed’s capacity to milk, several times. Now the record keeper for the world’s... read more

PPOC requests CPNP police training on credit card fraud

TAGBILARAN CITY, Bohol, June 3, (PIA) –Admitting they lack the capability of fighting credit card scams, Bohol Provincial Peace and Order Council (PPOC) has requested police top authorities to capacitate local police in handling incidents or cases of credit card fraud.   In its previous meeting last month, Bohol Chamber of Commerce and Industry has asked the local police leadership tips on how to handle credit card scams, which may have already victimized high end resorts in Panglao.   Former banker and now resort manager Marietta Gasatan earlier asked the local police on what to do in instances when they could tell that somebody is using a bogus credit card.   Gasatan, who had a long stint as a bank manager is not alien to credit card use.   But, in her experience, customers pre book a room in the resort, arrives and then stays, swiping cards in payment of bills and then leaves before the resort point of sale machine could communicate with the bank about the veracity of the card usage.   Processing the credit card transaction takes time, Gasatan told members of the PPOC in a meeting at the Governor’s Mansion Conference Hall.   Before the bank could tell that there was illegal usage, the customer has checked out leaving a heap of unsettled accounts.   This may not be as serious but since this causes great financial turmoil for a victim of fraud  and potentially put him in danger, something must be done.   What is the proper procedure in coordinating with police authorities when a credit card fraudster gets into the establishment? she...

BABALA

In english, the word simply means caution. The word however is coined from Bangsamoro Basic Law (BABALA), which to some quarters, is nothing but the hot potato in the widely rejected Memorandum of Agreement on Ancestral Domains (MOA-AD). For want of exhaustive information, we could hardly tell which is which but with our politicians track record of laziness, we could assume it as a pasted copy of the former. Like the MOA AD now, the government negotiators, again handpicked by the Administration just assumed Bangsamoro is just Moro Islamic Liberation Front, who speaks for the whole tribes of Mindanao. In last week’s Senate hearing, we learned that key groups in the proposed Bangsamoro region were never consulted about the peace agreement with the Moro Islamic Liberation Front or BBL that was drafted to implement it. President Aquino’s handpicked peace negotiators assumed too much. For the pay they get, they thought MILF speaks for the entire region. Without the consent of the sultanates of Mindanao, the local government officials in the affected region and neighboring provinces, the Moro National Liberation Front and the non-Muslim people who live there, including indigenous peoples, the BABALA is a red flag. Confronted with such a yawning deficiency in its proposed law, the administration has offered no other solution than to plow ahead with what is now clearly an artificial deadline: the SONA. That is the biggest infirmity and hell, it could kill the BABALA for good. But not, with this President. Instead, President Aquino reverted to gangster tactics that worked for him in the past: bribing lawmakers with pork like Coronas impeachment, and...
