Pangulong Arroyo appoints Yusoph as new Comelec commissioner

President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo appoints Elias Yusoph as the new Commission on Election (Comelec) commissioner.

Executive Secretary Eduardo Ermita says in a press briefing, that Yusoph will take over the vacant position of former Comelec Commissioner Romeo Brawner, who died of a heart attack last May 29, 2008. Ermita adds that Yusoph was highly recommended by the Bishops-Ulama Conference.

The appointment of Yusoph as Comelec commissioner, shows how the government is serious with their desire to appoint a Muslim in the Constitutional body.

Before he was appointed, Yusoph was a prosecutor in Marawi City since 1987. He also served as assistant city fiscal and special prosecutor in the Department of Justice in the the years 1983-1987 and 1980-1983 respectively. He passed the bar exam in 1977.
