Livestock, poultry noted Gainers despite El Niño

The wicked El Nino failed to dampen livestock and poultry subsectors as both managed to post modest gains in the first quarter of the year, the Department of Agriculture (DA) said.

In a recent report by the Bureau of Agricultural Statistics, it said livestock subsector grew by 0.51% in the first three months of 2010, with production increases noted for hog, goat and cattle.

Meanwhile, dairy production posted a hefty 17.22% output gain.

On the other hand, the poultry subsector expanded 2.02% on the back of increases in chicken and chicken egg production of 1.81% and 4.43%, respectively.

These two subsectors accounted for close to 30% of the total agricultural output for the first quarter, BAS said. (PIA-Bohol)

Rains coming with weather Disturbance off Mindanao

FINALLY, a respite from the drought, which has hit areas in the country.
A tropical depression, which would bring in the rains has been spotted off the Pacific Ocean and is expected to enter the Philippine area of responsibility (PAR) on Thursday, says the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa).

Nathaniel Cruz, Pagasa deputy administrator, said the weather disturbance predicts that it would bring rains over the eastern sections of the Visayas and Mindanao.

While talking about the possibility of the depression swerving towards Japan, Pag-asa noted that the high pressure prevailing in the country could block the disturbance from moving to Japan.

Seemingly too, the country’s prayers have been answered, sources said as the Catholic bishops issued a circular letter to pray the Oratio Imperata, or a prayer calling divine intervention and ease the effects of the El Niño phenomenon, which has destroyed crops harvests.

“El Nino” has affected local power generation

POWER gerenation from Bohol’s hydro-power plants have reportedly decreased due to insufficient water levels that can sustainably spin the turbines.

According the Bohol Electric Cooperative I General manager Carlos Itable, all of Bohol’s hydro electric power supplies decreased its generation due to low water supply.

He said that even the Ewon Sevilla hydro, now operated by Sta. Clara Development has to contend with 580 mega watt power generation output.

Ewon hydro facility is capable to generating 1.2 MegaWatts of power.

Hanopol’s maximum power of 2.5MW is now running at 1.8 MW.

Over this, the PDCC would explore the possibility of asking Salcon Power Utilities to allow the operation of the two standby diesel power plants to supplement the needed power for Bohol. (PIA Bohol)
