PRESIDENT Benigno Aquino III will ensure the welfare of Filipinos working in Singapore when
he visits that country this week. The President leaves Tuesday for a five-day state visit to
Indonesia and Singapore.
Presidential Communications Development and Strategic Planning Office Secretary Ramon
Carandang, said the President will prioritize knowing the conditions of Filipino workers in
Singapore because many of them work there than in Indonesia.
There are few Filipinos working in Indonesia and most of them are management and high
ranking professionals so they are more secured, he said.
“There’s really a need to focus on those working in Singapore because there are many more of
them there. Second, they are in need of more assistance because most of them are domestic
workers. So, the issue regarding the welfare benefit of the OFWs is more for Singapore than for
Indonesia” Carandang said.
According to the Foreign Affairs department the President’s trips are aimed at strengthening ties
with the neighboring countries. The visit also follows a tradition for new heads of state to pay
courtesy visits to fellow ASEAN-member countries.
After Indonesia, the President will fly to Singapore on Mar. 9, where he is set to hold briefings
at the Changi Reclamation Plant, Resorts World Sentosa, Singapore Technologies Kinetics and
the Changi International Airport. He leaves for Manila Mar. 11.
The Singaporean government will confer on President Aquino the honor of having an orchid
breed named after him, a courtesy accorded to a visiting heads of state. President Aquino
will also meet with the Filipino community in Singapore as well as with business taipans and
organizations to gain support for government investments. (PIA)

GISEGURO nila House Speaker Feliciano Belmonte Jr. ug Senate President Juan Ponce Enrile

Reproductive Health bill.

PRESIDENT Benigno S. Aquino III on Thursday instructed the Cabinet cluster on human
development for poverty reduction to study the resolution submitted by mayors, people’s
groups and non-government organizations involved in the implementation of KALAHI-CIDSS-
CDD projects urging the national government to adopt the KALAHI-CIDSS-CDD strategy as a
national program.
Social Welfare and Development Secretary Corazon Soliman in an interview said the
President wanted the details of the program so the national government can adopt it as a
national strategy for all government agencies in implementing their projects.
Soliman added that the KALAHI-CIDSS strategy of involving the community in the
implementation of pro-poor projects can be adopted by government agencies
In the proposed resolution, the KALAHI-CIDSS Mayors’ Forum said that the KALAHI-CIDSS
Community-Driven Development strategy, which was implemented since 2003 through
community participation in poverty reduction and good local governance activities, is found
to be effective in achieving local service delivery outcomes and best practices in good
governance.
It further said that the KALAHI-CIDSS-CDD strategy complements national government’s
efforts to converge programs and resources intended to support poverty reduction initiatives
at the local level.
KALAHI-CIDSS covers 42 provinces,200 municipalities and 4,583 barangays. Some 5,326
community projects have been built benefiting 1,197,772 households since 2003.
This year, KALAHI-CIDSS will scale up in 374 municipalities through additional funding from
the World bank and the Millennium Challenge Corporation grant. (PIA)

THERE would be no classes in all levels nationwide on Feb. 25 when the nation observes a
special holiday to mark the 25th anniversary of the 1986 EDSA People Power revolution.
Malacañang clarified it would be a regular working day in the government and the private
sector. However, the Palace has urged employers to allow their employees to leave early on
that day.
Officials said the declaration of a special holiday on Feb. 25 is still in line with Proclamation
84 signed by President Aquino last year that specified all regular and special holidays for the
year 2011.
Officials prepared an elaborate celebration marking the 25th anniversary of the peaceful
revolt that ended the dictatorship of the late strongman Ferdinand Marcos.
The 1986 EDSA people power revolution led to the proclamation of President Benigno
Aquino III’s mother, Corazon Aquino, as the 11th president of the Philippines after democracy
was restored to the country following the 14-year martial rule of Marcos. (PIA)

INTERIOR and Local Government Secretary Jesse Robredo disclosed on Sunday that some
175 erring policemen, most of them implicated in drug-related cases, have been dismissed
from the police service in the past six months.
Robredo, who is also concurrent chairman of the National Police Commission (Napolcom),
said the dismissal of the policemen should serve as a warning to all policemen nationwide to
shape up or ship out.
“The department does not tolerate cops who are either drug peddlers or drug users, or
worse, those who protect illegal drug syndicates,” said Robredo, who noted such cops would
automatically undergo summary dismissal proceedings.
He, however, assured that those who are sued because of fulfilling their duties will receive full
support from the government.
He said President Benigno Aquino III has earmarked P5 million for legal assistance to police
officers.
While the DILG is strict against police scalawags, Robredo said the department, through
the Napolcom, would provide legal aid to cops who are constantly being harassed with legal
cases for doing their jobs. (PIA)
