PNoy open to Senator Lacson as gov’t anti-graft head

President Benigno S. Aquino III said on Thursday that he is open to appointing Senator Panfilo Lacson as chief government anti-graft prober to look into and act on graft and corruption cases in the government.

The President said however that he is still awaiting a study being conducted by the Office of the Executive Secretary before drafting an Executive Order officially naming Lacson to the Inter-Agency Anti-Graft and Corruption Council.

“Well, open tayo pero hinihintay natin iyong…proposed executive order undergoing study by the Executive Secretary. Hinihintay ko pa ‘yung findings nila dito,” the President said.

He pointed out that other recent events affecting the country, such as the recent floods, misuse of the Priority Development Assistance Fund, and the crash of two shipping vessels in Cebu, have made focusing on working towards the possible appointment of Senator Lacson next to impossible but he vowed he would ask for updates from the Office of the Executive Secretary.

“I will follow it up with the Executive Secretary — dahil medyo matagal-tagal na ring pending ang proposal ni Senator Lacson,” the President said.

According to the President the Inter-Agency task force is composed of representatives from the Ombudsman, the Department of Justice and the Commission on Audit. (PND)

POEA issues total deployment ban to Egypt

A total deployment ban to Egypt has been imposed by the governing board of the Philippine Overseas Employment Administration (POEA) citing security risks for overseas Filipino workers (OFWs).

“The POEA Governing Board, in an emergency meeting, has approved yesterday Governing Board Resolution No. 9 Series of 2013 imposing a total ban on the processing and deployment of all overseas Filipino workers bound for Egypt,” Labor and Employment Secretary Rosalinda Baldoz said.

“It is not safe for OFWs to go to Egypt and work there, considering the present circumstances,” Baldoz added.

There are currently about 6,000 remaining Filipinos in Egypt.

Baldoz said the Department of Foreign Affairs had informed her that it has raised the crisis Alert Level 3 in Egypt in view of the escalating civil unrest and insecurity, as well as the declaration of a month-long state of emergency in the country.

Alert level 3 entails the voluntary repatriation of Filipinos in Egypt. The deployment of new workers, as well as the return to Egypt of vacationing workers, spouses of Egyptian nationals, Islamic University students, and their dependents, is likewise suspended.

It can be recalled that the DFA raised the crisis alert level in Egypt to Alert Level 2 on July 8, 2012. Four days later or on 12 July, the Governing Board, in Resolution No. 6 Series of 2013, imposed a temporary suspension on the processing and deployment of newly-hired OFWs bound for Egypt. (POEA)

“It is not safe for OFWs to go to Egypt and work there, considering the present circumstances,” matud pa ni Labor Sec. Rosalinda Baldoz.

Malacañang puts infographic materials and articles online about former Sen. Ninoy Aquino to mark 30th Death Anniv.

Malacanang makes available online infographic materials and articles about former Senator Benigno “Ninoy” Aquino Jr. in line with the observance of his 30th Death Anniversary, a Palace official said on Wednesday.

“August 21, 2013 marks the 30th anniversary of Senator Benigno S. Aquino Jr.’s return to the Philippines and his martyrdom. In fulfillment of its mandate as custodian of institutional memory, the Presidential Communications Development and Strategic Planning Office (PCDSPO) is spearheading an online commemoration which will feature an interactive page with a comprehensive timeline, music of the era, infographic maps, essays, and testimonials on Ninoy and his sacrifice, on the Presidential Museum and Library website,” Presidential Spokesperson Edwin Lacierda issued the statement during the regular press briefing in Malacañang on Wednesday.

The government called on the Filipino people to participate in the online commemoration which seeks to keep the spirit of Ninoy’s martyrdom alive as an example of the selfless sacrifice of a man who gave up his life to free a shackled country, Lacierda said.

“We call on Filipinos to participate in this campaign, which will source and publish short statements from those who had lived through that watershed event in our history,” Lacierda said.

“We will also be featuring a remarkable collection of interviews of Ninoy’s family and close associates, gathered by Ms. Cynthia Sycip and published in 1984. We will also put online, for the first time, the majority and minority reports of the Agrava Commission on the Official Gazette,” he stressed.

Lacierda asked the Filipino people to join the commemoration by posting on Twitter and Facebook with the hashtag #Ninoy or by sending an email to heritage@pcdspo.gov.ph.

“The nation once again marks Ninoy’s sacrifice, and your recollections and opinions will play a vital role in enabling a new generation of Filipinos to understand that period of martial law, and the turning point that was August 21, 1983,” he said. (PND)
