PCSO suggests raising bail for “illegal lotto” suspects

The Philippine Charity Sweepstakes Office (PCSO) authorities, including PCSO VisMin Department Manager William Medici, agrees that illegal numbers game has dented on their operations.

The PCSO is a government mandated office to deliver charity assistance to poor patients run the traditional sweepstakes draws and daily lottos. Its proceeds go to the common fund for the agency’s medical assistance and medical mission programs.

Their draws however provide a venue for illegal numbers game operators, robbing the government of revenues it can use for its service programs. These illegal lotto operators ride on their draws to perpetuate an illegal small town lotto operation. (PIA)

Panglao airport committee wants runway bidding soonest

The Panglao International Airport Development Project (PIADP) has been pushed for the runway bidding, by the Inter-Agency Committee. This is a move that would finally make visible the development of the dream airport.

In its development timetable provided by the PIADP secretariat, the preparation of the project’s detailed engineering works would be on from February to July. This was bared by Governor Erico Aumentado in his Governor’s Report.

The runway and its allied facilities would cover some 2.5 kilometers and would be designed in such a way that it can be upgradeable to accommodate the biggest plane of the Airbus fleet. Aumentado says that the runway would soon be extended to 3.8 kilometers but the initial bidding would yet cover the construction of 2.5 kilometer strip.

Aumentado insisted that the airport should be operational by December 2010, even if it would still be operating on temporary terminal hub, a tent city as he proposed. (PIA)

PCSO caravan carries charity virus to Bohol

In its 10th leg of the Summer Charity Caravan 2009, the Philippine Charity Sweepstakes Office (PCSO) spearheads activities and campaigns to infect people with the contagious the charity virus spreading in Bohol. PCSO will be visiting 20 provinces and municipalities in time for the 75th Anniversary of the sweepstakes.

Kaibigan ng PCSO attempts to recruit and mobilize thousands of volunteers for the various activities of the charity agency, particularly its historic National Medical Mission this September.

For the diamond anniversary, the PCSO puts up an ambitious simultaneous national medical and dental mission in the country’s 42,000 barangays on September 6.

A medical mission also unfolded at the Bohol Cultural center while the team also entertained requests for financial assistance to those who cannot afford to send their sick relatives to the hospital.

For 2008, reports said PCSO has served 163,948 patients, and released a little more than P143 M for various medical and hospitalization aid for the VisMin areas. (PIA)

PGMA congratulates 1,500 new town scholars

President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo awarded scholarship certificates to 1,500 incoming college freshmen under the “One Town, One Scholar (OTOS) program”.

The OTOS is the fulfillment of the Arroyo government’s objective of providing education for all.

The OTOS program ensures that a deserving high school graduate in every municipality will have a college education. And involves the awarding of four-to-five year scholarships to incoming freshmen who had been selected by the municipality as the “town scholar.”

Stipends of P15,000 per semester will be provided by CHED for SY 2009-2010 and every year thereafter for four to five years, subject to availability of funds in the general appropriations act.

The scholar must enroll only in CHED-identified priority programs and preferably in an SUC in or near the sponsoring municipality. (PIA-MMIO)
