Army brands lawless MILF group as criminals, not terrorists

Col. Nicanor E. Dolojan, Commanding Officer of the 403rd Brigade of the Philippine Army clarified that the AFP has not issued an official statement branding the lawless MILF group as terrorists.

“However, they are branded as criminals,” he added.

He stressed that they are criminals for the atrocities they committed and that they should be made answerable for what they’ve done.

The AFP does not have the power to declare or recommend to the government that this or that group is a terrorist.

It must undergo due process before it is forwarded to and decided upon by the National Anti-Terror Council as sanctioned by the United Nations (UN), the army officer added.

Army hails support from Muslims in hunt for Bravo

The Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) are getting support from the Muslim populace in conducting law enforcement operations against the lawless Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF) led by Abdullah Macapaar alias Commander Bravo.

Major Benedicto Manquiquis, Commanding Officer of the 1st Civil Military Operations Unit, 1st Infantry Division of the Philippine Army said in a press briefing.

According to Manquiquis, some Muslims have volunteered to help the military in distributing the “wanted” leaflets of Commander Bravo. The materials show the bounty for those who can give information that that would lead to the capture of Bravo.

“This shows that even Bravo’s fellow Muslim brothers wants him to be captured soon,” he added.

The AFP officer also stressed that the identity of the informant will be kept a secret and the reward will be given when Bravo will be captured dead or alive. (PIA/Bohol)

PGMA orders contingency plan for OFWs vs recession

President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo directed the Departments of Foreign Affairs, Labor and Employment, and the Commission on Overseas Filipino Workers (OFWs) to draft a contingency plan to cushion the impact of possible recession in developed economies where there are Filipino workers.

The President issued the order at the launching of the Second Global Forum on Migration and Development Forum (GFMD2).

The President said that there is an urgent need “to work on all fronts to manage inflationary pressures and provide a safety net for those who were hardest hit by these global developments.”

The contingency plan for OFWs, which the President preferred to call “expatriates” is the government’s way of caring for them as well as honoring them as they play a critical role in the country’s economic and social stability.

Government is working hard to improve the country’s economy so that the day will come when Filipinos do not have to go abroad to earn a living but rather as a career choice, the president added. (PIA/Bohol)
