Department of Education Sec. Jesli Lapus enjoins campaigns against poverty. The whole education community will hold activities that highlight the celebration of the International Day for the Eradication of Extreme Poverty on October 17-23.
The theme: “Stand United, Fight Poverty”.
Lapus ordered all public school officials to hold programs in support of Millennium Development Goals (MDG), which include the eradication of extreme poverty and hunger, the achievement of universal primary education, improvement of maternal health and combating HIV/AIDS diseases. (DEPED/PIA)

The month of October is regarded as the Local Government Month. This is in pursuant to Presidential Proclamation No. 63 declaring the second week of October as the Local Government Week and the 10th of October as the Local Government Day.
The main purpose for these celebrations is to bring to fore the critical role of local government units in nation building.
In line with the proclamation, the LGUs are enjoined to complement the anniversary celebration by conducting press conferences at their levels highlighting the gains of decentralization, LGU innovative initiatives with the private sector, and sharing of best practices.
As part of the month-long celebration, a synchronized conduct of Barangay Assemblies on October 17 has been scheduled by the DILG. (PIA)

October is dubbed as the Consumers Welfare Month. The celebration focuses on the promotion of the extensive use of generic drugs and the patronage of Filipino-made generic products.
This year’s theme: “Generic Drugs: Gawang Pinoy! Galing Pinoy! Tangkilikin Natin” will underscore the government’s policy to protect public health and to adopt appropriate extensive measure to promote and ensure access to affordable but quality medicines for all.
The Department of Health in coordination with the National Consumers Affair Council, spearheads this year’s observance being the lead agency in protecting people’s health and in ensuring access of all the people to quality and affordable medicine. (PIA)

The Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) releases list of basic necessities under automatic price control. An advisory to all retailers declaring a price freeze on basic necessities as provided for under the Price Act or Republic Act 7581. This is in consonance to Proclamation No. 1898 signed recently by President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo declaring the entire country on October 2 under a state of calamity.
With the signing of Proclamation No. 1898, prices of basic goods are effectively controlled by the Department of Trade and Industry, giving the agency the power to freeze prices of basic commodities at their prevailing prices.
Retailers are warned by the DTI to observe the PRICE FREEZE in all brands of listed commodities to avoid sanctions: MAXIMUM OF 10 YEARS IMPRISONMENT AND FINE OF P 1M.

A student from the Polytechnic University of the Philippines (PUP) won the the grand prize in the photography category of the 2009 ASEAN-Korea Multimedia Competition. The said student is Jophel Botero Ybiosa whose entries were “The Guide”, “Festive Day” and “Reflection of a Culture.” All of these pieces featured the Higantes Festival of Angono, Rizal and Aliwan Festival in Manila.
The contest, which carries the theme “Cultural Diversity and Harmony,” was divided in two categories namely, video/multimedia and photography, and was participated in by over 350 ASEAN and Korean university and graduate students.
Ybiosa was previously honored as one of the finalists in the print category of 2009 Bangkok International Print and Drawing Competition. Last June 26, 2009, he won the Championship title in the Interschool Extemporaneous Speech Contest held in Aldaba Hall of University of the Philippines, Diliman. He was also the Top 7 and Top 10 Winner 2009 Photoworld Cup-June Edition organized by Federation of Philippine Photographer’s Foundation.
Ybiosa is also one of the semi-finalists in the Oil Painting Category of this year’s Metrobank Art and Design Excellence National Competition. On October 20, 2009, he is going to be awarded as one of the Finalists of 2009 Shell National Student Art Competition in Ayala Museum. (Sining Pilipinas)
