One million more Pinoys employed in July

One million more Filipinos were employed this July 2009. Currently, the number of employed persons nationwide rose to 35.51 million this month, about a million more of July 2008.

The National Statistics Office (NSO) data showed that the services sector boosted the employment rate as it accounts for about 52 percent of employed persons in July this year. The agriculture and industrial sectors correspondingly accounted for 33.6 percent and 14.8 percent of the country’s employed persons. The industrial sector’s employment share remained unchanged from last year, however. (PIA)

Half-priced drugs now in small drugstores too

CHEAPER medicines are now also available in small town pharmacies across the country.

This as the total implementation of the mandatory price cut of some medicines takes effect since September 15, or last Tuesday.

The mandatory price cut, now implemented in small drugstores in towns takes effect a month after the law ordered pharmacies with automated ordering systems to implement since August 15.

Brought down by the government’s implementation of the Cheaper Medicines Act and the voluntary offer by pharmaceutical companies, the move also makes easy public access to seven categorized drugs.

Some of the categorized drugs are anti-hypertensives, anti-cholesterol, anti-thrombotic, anti-diabetics, anti-biotics and anti-cancer drugs.

On this, President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo has directed the Department of Health (DOH) and the Food and Drugs Administration (FDA) to monitor the implementation of the law.

Bohol Sangguniang Panlalawigan Committee on Health Chair Cesar Tomas Lopez has called everyone in communities to help monitor the implementation of the law in as much as it should help alleviate the concerns of people taking maintenance drugs.

Lopez, who is a physician by profession said any drugstore who does not properly implement the law should be reported right away.

Included in the price cut are anti-hypertensives Telmisartan’s Micardis, Aprovel, Norvasc, Lipitor and Zithromax, Cytosar-U and Adriblastina.

Also in are anti-thrombotics like Plavix and anti-diabetic Diamicron.

Antibiotic Tacozin’s Piperazillin, Ciprobay, Flagyl, Augmentin’s are sold at half the price in pharmacies.

The rest of the medicines with shaved prices are anti-cancer drugs Blenoxane, Paraplatin, Platinol, Cytoxan, Vepesid, Pirunethol and Zexate. (PIA)

More NPA rebels abandon communism

According to military reports, more and more New People’s Army (NPA) rebels abandon communism, as they continue to renounce armed struggle and choose to embrace a life of peace as evidenced in the various surrenders in the different parts of the country.

Army spokesman Lt. Col. Arnulfo Marcelo Burgos said the Philippine Army has recorded a total of 173 NPA surrenders in the past two months.

“Just a year after the Social Integration Program (SIP) was launched, the Office of the Presidential Adviser on the Peace Process recorded a total of 548 surrenderers, 330 of whom yielded firearms,” Burgos said.

Burgos also revealed that the papers of another batch of 261 former communist rebels, who recently surrendered to avail of the SIP are currently being processed. (PIA)

DSWD celebrates National Family Week

This September 21 to 27, 2009, the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD-7) spearheads the celebration of the National Family Week.

With the theme, “Si Nanay, Matatag sa Lahat ng Bagay”, the celebration highlights the important role that mothers play in strengthening family unity and solidarity.

In Central Visayas, the Regional Inter-Agency Committee for the Filipino Family (RIACFF) has lined up several activities to celebrate the family week. Several non-government organizations such as Lihok Filipina, Share-A-Child Movement and Panaghi-usa will schedule seminars and training on family solidarity.

The RIACFF will also promote the celebration through radio and TV guestings, forums, and school-based symposia that will be initiated by the DepEd-7. (PIA)

DepEd’s Project ReACh targets 5M out of school kids

A strong partnership with local government units (LGUs) is half of the solution in bringing to school some 5.6 million out of school children and youth. This was the statement disclosed by the Department of Education (DepEd) Secretary Jesli Lapus.

Under Project ReACh (Reaching All Children), DepEd is banking on the active involvement of LGU and barangay officials to “find these school-aged children, reach out to them and keep them in school.”

Project ReACh enjoins all community stakeholders to extend assistance even beyond the workplace and even beyond their working hours when necessary to minimize, if not, eradicate potential school drop-outs.

Project ReACh targets elementary and high school enrollees. (DepEd)
