PGMA declares Eid’l Fit’r start on Monday

PRESIDENT Gloria Macapagal Arroyo declared September 21 as a regular holiday, to commemorate the Eid’l Fit’r or commonly the feast of the Ramadhan.

By virtue of Proclamation 1880, the president has propped up Republic Act 9177, which declared the regular observance of the Eid’l Fit’r as a regular holiday all throughout the country.

The government’s Office of Muslim Affairs (OMA) has earlier determined the feast of the Ramadhan in accordance with the Islamic lunar calendar.

The Muslim commemoration of the feast starts September 21, OMA said.

According to the President, declaring the day also promotes cultural understanding and integration of the entire Filipino nation because it affords Christians the chance to join Muslim brothers in the observance of the feast.

Moreover, in the proclamation, she said the declaration brings the religious and cultural significance of the Eid’l Fit’r to the fore of national consciousness.

The proclamation has also lengthened to one more day the weekend, allowing domestic tourists enough time to experience the country’s potentials. (PIA)

BMI to see if Superferry 9 stowed its cargoes right

The Board of Marine Inquiry (BMI) would like to find out if the Super Ferry 9 stowed its cargoes right, as there are suspicions that there was an un-even stowing of cargoes that may have caused the vessel to tilt.

In his testimony, ship captain Jose Yap said that still winds measuring 10 knots caused the boat to tilt on its side. Yap added that even if the crew tried to even the boat by heeling or allowing water to the boat ballast tanks to straighten the boat, it continued to tilt.

The BMI believed that a 10 knot wind would not be enough to lift a 7,268 ton boat. (PIA)

Herrera dares congressmen: Publish your funded projects

Vice Governor Julius Caesar Herrera dares representatives to publish their funded projects in the full spirit of transparency.

He said every Congressman is entitled to P70 million in pork barrel funds annually, a fact that makes each town in Bohol eligible to at least P5M annually or at least P45M in a full congressman’s term.

People have the right to know what these projects are, where they are located, and how the people have benefited from them.

Many have not discounted that aside from possible double-funded projects, some money go to bribery, which a recent Transparency International report says, costing the country at least p100M a year. (PIA)
