Proposed LPG law pushed to protect consumers

“The LPG Law is now pending in Congress,” Department of Energy Secretary Angelo Reyes said. He further adds, “It will strengthen the Energy Regulatory Commission’s (ERC) police powers against the illegal supply of LPG, mainly involving the under-filling of cylinders.

He said the government also wants to crack down on the unsafe supply of LPG cylinders. Leakage in LPG tanks accounts for 30 percent of causes of fire.

The LPG Law is preceded by the Biofuels Act, which seeks to promote the use of environment-friendly fuels like bio-ethanol and bio-diesel. (PIA)

Palace, Aboitiz commend rescue group

Defense Secretary Gilberto Teodoro, chair of the National Disaster Coordinating Council, was commended by Deputy Presidential Spokesperson Lorelie Fajardo in behalf of Malacanang for immediately and efficiently pulling in manpower to rescue the victims of the sinking Super Ferry 9.

While Aboitiz Power Corporation President and CEO Erramon I. Aboitiz lauded the cooperation shown by all sectors in the community led by the government which prevented a massive damage of the said accident.

Aboitiz also mentioned the help exerted by its competitor Oceanic Shipping owned by Mr. Jolly Go for sending a couple of its vessels to rescue the victims. Aboitiz told the media that the company is supportive to Marina ‘s call for a strict inspection of their vessels.

However, President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo still ordered the Department of Transportation and Communication (DOTC) to conduct a thorough investigation into the incident. (PIA)

PhilHealth expands benefits and services to OFWs

As to the Filipinos providing quality and affordable health care services to OFWs and their dependents

OFWs and their dependents can now enjoy the PhilHealth inpatient and outpatient benefit packages in accredited facilities, as PhilHealth further expands its benefits and services through the Overseas Workers Program.

Their annual contribution is only P900. However, to continuously avail of these benefits, OFWs should renew their membership annually with PhilHealth by paying the annual premium and presenting the required legal documents. (PhilHealth/PIA)

Housing fair slated in October

This coming October, a nationwide housing fair will be held by the government and private sector. This is in recognition of October as the Shelter month. The fair is offering some 50,000 acquired properties in the different sites nationwide.

Housing and Urban Development Coordinating Council (HUDCC) assistant secretary Pamela Felizarta said this activity would allow the acquired assets of government financial institutions be sold to prospective homebuyers at better price.

The fair will be held in coordination with the Construction and Real Estate Builders Association of the Philippines with the support of the Shelter Agencies of the government namely Pag-IBIG Fund, National Home Mortgage Finance Corporation, Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas, Government Service Insurance System, Social Security System and other related agencies. Superferry 9 probe starts today

The investigation into the sinking of Super Ferry 9 will start today and be conducted by the Special Board of Marine Inquiry. This was the information disclosed by Deputy Presidential Spokesperson Lorelei Fajardo.

The investigation is in compliance with President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo’s directive to the Department of Transportation and Communication to conduct a thorough investigation as to prevent a recurrence of the sea mishap and avoid the loss of lives.

The Super Ferry 9, carrying more than 900 passengers, capsized at dawn Sunday off the coast of the Zamboanga Peninsula. (PIA)
