Following his resignation Tuesday, Socio Economic Planning Secretary Ralph Recto is free to choose his political party to pursue his political career.
Since he failed in his second reelection bid for the Senate in the 2004 elections, Recto said he is going to give it another try. “But I don’t know which party he will choose to run in,” Executive Secretary Eduardo Ermita said.
Ermita pointed out that the usual procedure in filling up a vacant post is for the President to choose from the second level, or the undersecretaries or assistant secretaries first. But she can also look from outside the organization/office concerned.
On whether more resignations from the Cabinet are to be expected, Ermita said appointive officials aspiring to run for elective positions, must resign at the prescribed date of the Commission on Elections which is on the third week of November. (OPS/PIA)

Nonito Donaire defeated Rafael Concepcion on Saturday night(Sunday morning here) to take the WBA interim title in his super flyweight debut. Judge Max De Luca scored the fight 117-111, Duane Ford had it 115-113, and Jerry Roth called it 116-112; letting Donaire win by Unanimous Decision.
Concepcion, who earned the respect of the crowd for going the distance, weighed in four pounds over the 115-pound limit, a violation that cost him 20 percent of his $65,000 purse. Even with a win, he wouldn’t have been awarded the championship.
During the fight, Donaire even hurt his right hand landing an upper cut in the early round. “But no matter how messed up or sprained it was, I am here to fight,” he said.
On the undercard, Steven Luevano retained his WBO featherweight title after being floored by challenger Bernabe Concepcion following the seventh round bell. Concepcion, who was trailing on two of the three judges’ scorecards, was disqualified. Mark Mellligen defeated Ernesto Zepeda via 4th round TKO, 2:40. And Anthony Peterson defeated Luis Arceo via Unanimous Decision for 10 Rounds.
