PMA accepts applications for entrance exam

The Philippine Military Academy Entrance Examination (PMAEE) is scheduled on August 30, 2009 at different Examination Centers in the country.

The PMA Entrance Examination covers Algebra and Geometry, Grammar and Composition, Reading and Comprehension, Verbal and Numerical Reasoning and Pattern Analysis.

Apply thru online application or download PMA Entrance Exam Application Form at http://www.pma.ph. After accomplishing the form, mail to the Office of Cadet Admission, Philippine Military Academy, Fort del Pilar, Baguio City 2602 together with the following: authenticated or NSO copy of your birth certificate and certified true copy of your High School Form 137. DOST calls for nominations for outstanding S&T achievements

The National Academy of Science and Technology (NAST), of the Department of Science and Technology (DOST), is calling nominations for outstanding achievements in science and technology.

The following are the awards and recognition for deserving scientists :

  • OUTSTANDING YOUNG SCIENTIST (OYS);
  • THIRD WORLD ACADEMY OF SCIENCES PRIZE FOR YOUNG SCIENTISTS IN THE PHILIPPINES;
  • NAST TALENT SEARCH FOR YOUNG SCIENTISTS;
  • OUTSTANDING SCIENTIFIC PAPER;
  • OUTSTANDING BOOK/MONOGRAPH;
  • PRO SCIENTIA TRANSFORMATRIX AWARD;
  • THE NAST-HUGH GREENWOOD ENVIRONMENTAL SCIENCE AWARD; and
  • NAST-LELEDFI AWARD FOR OUTSTANDING RESEARCH IN TROPICAL MEDICINE.

NEDA says RP no longer in danger of recession

The country is no longer in danger of falling into a recession, but will improve instead as forecasted by various foreign analysts. This is acoording to National Economic and Development Authority (NEDA) Deputy Director General Rolando Tungpalan.

Tungpalan said “the economy has demonstrated greater resiliency,” as US economy begins to get better. He adds that overseas Filipino workers (OFW) remittances have continued to pour in, with May records showing 3.7 percent growth.

Tungpalan has also reported that employment has risen recently in the Information and Communication Technology (ICT) sector and tourism industry. (PIA)

RP approved foreign direct investment reaches P4-B in first half – NSCB

The National Statistical Coordination Board (NSCB) said that approved foreign direct investments (FDIs) in the country amounted to P4 billion in the first half of the year.

Of the investment promotion agencies (IPAs), the Philippine Economic Zone Authority (PEZA) attracted more investors contributing 70.4 percent. The Board of Investment (BOI) approved investment pledges with 22.2 percent share valued at P4.3 billion. The Clark Development Corporation (CDC), received and approved FDI projects valued at P 62.6 million. While the Subic Bay Metropolitan Authority’s (SBMA) FDI approval went down by 94.6 percent from P782.7 million to P42.4 million.

The NSCB said a total of 19,596 jobs are expected to be generated from the FDI projects approved by the four investment promotion agencies in the first quarter of 2009, down by 29.5 percent from the 27,779 jobs in the same period in 2008.

While, the combined foreign and Filipino projects approved by the IPAs are seen to generate 26,106 jobs, 36.9 percent lower than 41,390 jobs projected in the first quarter of 2008. (PNA)

Smart reports broadband, SMS disruption

Disruptions in international and broadband connections services, such as Smart Bro and Smart Bro Plug-It, were caused by a pan-Asia cable cut early Wednesday around 10 a.m. This is according to Smart Communications, a Telecom services provider.

Smart further stressed, the disruption also affected its international voice and SMS services.

The affected undersea cable is the Asia-Pacific Cable Network 2 (APCN2), which runs between China and Taiwan but also connects to the Philippines, Hong Kong, South Korea, Japan, Singapore and Malaysia.
