Boholanos from around the world have gathered in full strength in the province to savor all the exciting events and festivities prepared by the city and provincial government with an international group of Boholano expats, led by New York-based nurse Betty Veloso-Garcia. This reunion of Boholanos is called Tigum Bol-Anon sa Tibuok Kalibutan(TBTK) and comes only once every three years. This year’s TBTK included an audience with President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo, who will fly in Tagbilaran on Wednesday, July 22, 2009 to join “Bohol Day”. The rest of the activities include local and international job fairs, medical missions, mass confirmations, beauty contests, reunions of families, clans and institutions, eco-tours and cultural happenings under the “Sandugo Festival.” This year’s theme, “Green Bohol,” expresses their deep appreciation for the rich natural bounties the province has been blessed amid the threats posed by climate change.
Meanwhile, a nationally known newspaper journalist confessed that as a confirmed city mouse, as she called Tagbilaran, she has been in awe not only of the beauty of the province that has been blessed by nature but also about how, in the last three TBTK, the Boholanos have demonstrated an incredible solidarity as the reunion becomes bigger and bigger. The writer said she cannot think of any other province exhibiting this kind of bonding between local and foreign-based folks.

Aside from their usual call on the faithful to vote wisely, Catholic Church leaders are encouraging principled persons to run for public office in next year’s presidential and national elections. The Catholic calls upon those who are competent, persons of integrity and [persons] committed to change to get involved directly in principled partisan politics and become candidates for political election, aware that the common good is above the good of vested interests. The influential Catholic church issued the pastoral statement at the conclusion of its two-day plenary assembly on Sunday. Its members elected a new set of officers, with Tandag (Surigao Del Sur) Bishop Nereo Odchimar as incoming president by Dec. 1 to succeed Bishop Antonio Lagdameo. The election over the weekend capped the four day retreat among bishops at the Betania retreat house in Tagaytay City. Bishop Odchimar traced his roots in Bohol. Bishop’s mother is from Garcia Hernandez Town and is related to the Galidos’. Before the election took place, Odchimar was already forecast to be Lagdameo’s successor being already the CBCP Vice President. The successor was supported by the Mindanao bloc of around 20 bishops.

Vice Governor Julius Cesar Herrera said that Bohol’s water supply can become its biggest export in the coming years. Bohol is way ahead Cebu province particularly with abundance in water. Herrera said that the value of our water will increase as the water sources in neighboring islands particularly Cebu is drying up. Herrera attributed Bohols abundant water supply to its forest cover in certain parts of the province. He warned a seizure on illegal logging activities to protect the trees.
The Vice-Governor asked local governments to help in protecting the forest areas within their jurisdiction and work hand in hand with the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR). Herrerra urged citizens to do their share after a confirmed report that some local officials are involved in the illegal logging activities. In addition to the protection of the trees, Herrera said Boholanos should actively take part in the reforestation efforts
