TechTalk: Alcatel One Touch Nation arrives in Bohol

Flashback:

The brand Alcatel was one of the manufacturers who first introduced to us the mobile phone.  A few years back, they sold the famous soap-shaped mobile phone, that had a small screen with orange backlighting.  Back then, they weren’t the coolest designs you could find, but their phones were as sturdy as the phones from the brands that lead the market during that time.

That “safeguard” shaped phone was this writer’s first mobile phone.  It was handed down, and I was happy and content because it did what it had to do, and that was to text and call my friends and family. Then, as more phones and brands eventually entered the country, the manufacturer Alcatel suddenly went silent.

Surprise comeback:

I call it a surprise comeback because, well, I think they just came out of nowhere and attacked the Philippine mobile industry again.  The last time I saw an Alcatel phone was, I think during 2010.  It was one of my friend’s phones and I was surprised at how chic and sleek their designs were becoming.

Then, enter this year, particularly yesterday, at the BQ Mall Atrium, where the Alcatel One Touch Nation proudly presented their five new mobile phones.   Save N’ Earn has gathered the market’s mobile phone manufacturers and put them together for an Expo in time with the TBTK celebrations.

The Phones:

The onetouch 810D Glam:  The phone especially made for the ladies.

Specs: Dual Sim; Expandable Memory up to 16GB; MP3 Player and FM Radio

The onetouch 918N Glory:  Alcatel describes it just as it is, Easy, practical and fun.

Specs:  Android 2.3 Gingerbread; Capacitive Touch; 3G+ HSDPA; Facebook; Wi-Fi; Dual Sim

The onetouch 918N GloryX:  Dreaming of an affordable yet stylish Android phone? This is it!

Specs:  Android 2.3 Gingerbread; Capacitive Touch; 3G+ HSDPA; Facebook; 3.0mp Camera; Wi-Fi; Dual Sim

The onetouch 985N Blaze:  The more sophisticated, yet still budget friendly Android phone.

Specs:  Android 2.3 Gingerbread; Sub Camera; Mutli-Touch; Wi-Fi; Dual Sim; G-Sensor; AGPS; 3G+ HSDPA; 5.0 MP Camera

The onetouch 995 Sapphire HD: Alcatel’s most sophisticated Smartphone yet. This unit boasts of specs  fit for the seasoned smartphone user, but comes in a lower price.

Specs:  Android 2.3.5; 4.3” display; HD video; 1.4 GHZ processor; 5MP Camera; 3G+ HSDPA

Alcatel’s phones have come a long way from their previous designs.  They have already been successful globally, and have come back to the Philippines to provide phones that can compete with both high end and feature units.  This has made the market a better place for the consumers to choose the phones that can best suit their needs and their budget, and a better assurance that we can have products that are more competitive and worth every peso that we pay.

ADB, country’s partner for development, Aquino says

President Benigno S. Aquino III addressed the opening ceremony Friday of the Asian Development Bank 45th Annual Meeting of the Board of Governors and expressed his gratitude for the continued support of the financial institution to the country.

In his speech during ADB’s annual gathering at the Philippine International Convention Center (PICC) in Pasay City, the President spelled out the reform measures his administration has carried out that benefited a large number of Filipinos especially the poor.

Through these measures, he said his government was able to intensify social and infrastructure investments, develop its human resources, and increase the budget on education and health care.

During the initial period of the new administration, the President said they were able to channel more government resources to the poor and underprivileged.

“The government’s conditional cash transfer program experienced an almost fourfold increase over the past two years, from P10 billion in 2010, catering to about 800,000 families, to P39.4 billion this year for over three million families. All of these we were able to do without raising taxes,” the President said.

“These are amounts that have been generously augmented by those who share our vision of an equitably progressive Philippines. The Asian Development Bank’s Official Development Assistance (ODA) assistance to the Philippines amounts to $761.97 million,” he added.

These include $643.85 million to projects concerning social protection and support for agrarian reform; rural infrastructure enhancement, and credit for better health care and irrigation in the Southern Philippines, the President said.

The chief executive also mentioned ADB’s participation in the Public-Private Partnership Program and the government efforts to reform the justice system and carry out the energy- efficient electric tricycle project. The government has started to achieve its goal because of ADB’s help, he noted.

“For this, you have the gratitude of our people, and a commitment from my administration. Gone are the days when the funds you funnel to our country will end up like water leaking through a broken pail,” the President said assuring the financial institution to continue seeing results of good government in the Philippines. The country, he said, is prepared to follow through on its commitments.

Among those who joined the President during ADB’s opening ceremony include Vice President Jejomar Binay, House Speaker Feliciano Belmonte, ADB President Haruhiko Kuroda, Finance Secretary Cesar Purisima and Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas Gov. Amando
Tetangco Jr. (PCOO)

E-Jeepneys: A Possible Paradigm Shift to Help Alleviate Plight of Jeepney Drivers in the Country— TUCP

TUCP News Release
Date Released: February 29, 2012

The Trade Union Congress of the Philippines (TUCP) yesterday welcomed the introduction of e-jeepneys and its monthly salarization scheme to its drivers as a possible introduction of a paradigm shift to alleviate the plight of thousands of Filipino drivers and reduce emission of fossil-fuel pollution.

“The introduction of regular monthly salary to e-jeepney drivers could probably change the daily calculus of our drivers in terms of income and working environment. Nowadays, with the boundary system, they are earning a measly 300 to 400 pesos take home pay after a day’s 10-hour rigorous work. Yet, if they are paid with e-jeepneys’ regular salary, well, this can spell an improvement in their way of life,” said Democrito Mendoza, TUCP President.

Mendoza also emphasized that with the current e-jeepney concept as introduced, drivers will not just enjoy the security of a dignified waged earner but they will also contribute in minimizing the pollution in their working environment.

“With the e-jeepney, drivers’ exposure and their contribution to the pollution on the streets where they work is dramatically lessened. If pollution in their working environment is minimized, they tend to be more productive,” Mendoza added.

Mendoza made the reaction in view of the granting of Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board (LTFRB) franchise the other day to 21 e-jeepneys to ply some select routes in Makati City beginning tomorrow March 1.

There are 203,000 estimated registered fossil-fuelled jeepneys with the Land Transportation Office (LTO), and around 50,000 of which are in Metro Manila. ###

Creditor status in IMF signifies strong confidence for Philippine financial system, says Palace

MALACAÑANG welcomed the recent recognition of the Philippines after it became one of the creditor nations in the 180-nation International Monetary Fund (IMF).

“We welcome that recognition from a better nation to a creditor nation. That’s a big jump. We’re certainly proud of the recognition by the international financial community of the significant steps that we have taken in improving our financial system. And that’s
an indication of the recognition of the international financial community,” Presidential Spokesman Edwin Lacierda said during the regular press briefing in Malacañang on Wednesday.

“We have received several upgrades in the past year and these are all indication of the international community’s confidence on the Aquino administration and on the Philippines,” he added.

The Philippines is looking forward to become an active participant in assisting other nations in distress under the IMF. The country has made available 163.8 million in special drawing rights or SDRs under a currency exchange mechanism known among members as the
Financial Transactions Plan or FTP.

The Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas (BSP) said that with the continued membership of the Philippines with the FTP, it could become part of a new borrowing scheme called the new arrangements to borrow or NAB facility of the IMF. The facility seeks to help distressed
countries or institutions.

The Philippines had been a Financial Transactions Plan participant since 2010, funding the loans and repayment operations of the IMF by using the foreign exchange resources of its financially strong members to help weak nations.

The Philippines holds a creditor or reserve position in the IMF through its participation in the FTP, making it a net lender rather than net borrower.

According to the BSP the participation of the Philippines to the FTP contributed to international efforts to mitigate the spillover effects of Europe’s sovereign debt crisis by enhancing global financial safety nets. (PCOO)
