May records 48 More cases in May

TAGBILARAN CITY, June 27 (PIA)—With increasing traffic related incidents heaping up cases and bloating crimes logged in municipal police blotters, Bohol Provincial Police Office reports a total of 84 more crimes in May over the previous month.

Reporting for BPPO police barracks chief PSSupt. Dennis Agustin, PCSuperintendent Lorenzo Batuan pointed out that the 217 index crimes in April rose to 224 in May this year.

At the Provincial Peace and Order Council Friday, June 25, Col. Batuan pointed to the usual culprits in the elevation of total crime volume in Bohol.

“As usual, the noted increase is due to road accidents resulting to Homicide, Damage to Properties, and Physical Injuries, he told PPOC members.

On the other hand, for non index crimes, BPPO operations chief also noted that of the crimes in April, Bohol tallied 393, a figure which further drowned with the 470 cases by May.

The police provincial headquarters recorded 610 crime volume in April, which also rose to 694 in May.

Of the 610 crimes logged in April, Col Batuan showed that 178 of the cases, or 34.26% are crimes in the blotter for traffic related incidents.

The figure eased a bit with May’s 694 crimes where 207 of them were traffic related incidents.

Traffic incidents in the blotter in Bohol stations reached 29.8% for May, still a considerable count considering that the 207 cases could have been significantly lower should people get on to it.

To illustrate the point, in April for example, BPPO snags 110 cases of physical injuries, 62 damage to property as well as 6 homicide cases.

When May came, Camp Dagohoy statisticians received total crime volume at 122, 77 of them caused damage to property and 8 cases of homicide.

PPOC Chair Governor Edgar Chatto once picked the good and well paved road networks as a lure for drivers to over-speed which almost always results to accidents.

Also, irregular under the table deals at the Land Transportation Office have been pointed out as largely contributing to the proliferation of incompetent and unskilled drivers.

Drivers who do not want to get in line and undergo the circuitous processing of papers are now paying the examiners at the LTO to obtain a license.

This is despite the fact that traffic enforcers who would dent on the campaign to rid the streets of irresponsible and unskilled, the road-worthy and the ill-maintained, could hardly take off with enforcement people getting embroiled in controversies. (rac/PIA-7/Bohol)

55 thousand Bohol voters missed voting a president

TAGBILARAN CITY, May 11 (PIA)–Like what the Commission on Elections (COMELEC) predicted, voter turnout in Bohol went higher than projected, reaching 85.45%.

And, at least, for the position of the president, about 8.7% of the active voters either refused to pick among the six presidential options, over voted on the least or lost their votes to over-shading.

There is no way however to prove if there were over over-voting or over shading.

From the COMELEC official results, about 682, 608 from the 798, 768 registered Boholano voters participated in the May 9 local elections, thus 85.45%.

But out of the votes of 682, 608 active voters for the position of the president, a good 55, 153 were uncounted for over voting, under voting or plainly leaving the choices blank or excessive shading which constitutes the 8.7% of the total votes cast.

Of the total valid votes cast, presidential pick Rodrigo Duterte (Partido ng Demokratikong Pilipino) claimed the biggest chunk in the vote pie with 310, 114 votes which constitutes 45.43% of the actual voters.

Following him is Mar Roxas (Liberal party) who claimed 29.37% of the vote chunk. Roxas garnered 200, 544 votes.

On third spot in Bohol is senator Grace Poe, who earned 68, 098 votes racking in 9.9% of the votes cast for the day.

Fourth is vice president Jejomar Binay who got 42, 245 votes which make up for the 6.2% of the days votes cast.

Meanwhile, 6018 Boholanos picked Merriam Santiago and this got her .88 % of the active voters share.

Whether there was really a substitution with the dead candidate Roy Seneres, the name still earned .06 % of the vote pie.

Seneres had 437 Boholanos picking him or his substitute. (rac/PIA-7/Bohol)

Gov’t waives lab fee to hasten rabies-free Philippines

Dog and cat owners in the country would no longer have to pay a laboratory fee to have their pets tested for rabies.
This is a welcome development as Secretary of Agriculture Proceso J. Alcala ordered a moratorium on charging of the laboratory fee for rabies examination in government facilities.
DA is waiving the payment of laboratory fees at the Philippine Animal Health Center of the Bureau of Animal Industry (DA-BAI) and the Regional Animal Disease Diagnostic Laboratories (RADDLs) of the Department of Agriculture Regional Field Offices beginning February 2015 until December 31, 2016.
Although rabies diagnosis is available in government facilities, there are still unreported cases of animal rabies due to non-submission of samples for laboratory confirmation. The payment of a laboratory fee for rabies is seen as a hindrance because most people in rural areas could not afford to pay the fee.
Secretary Alcala said the laboratory examination for rabies should be free of charge to encourage submission of more samples from suspected animal rabies cases. Waiving the lab fee is in line with DA-BAI’s thrust to hasten the goal of a rabies-free Philippines through dog vaccination.
“There are a number of people who could not afford to pay the Php 200.00 laboratory fee for rabies examination. In waiving the laboratory fee, more pet owners especially in the rural areas will be encouraged to have their dogs tested for rabies” said Dr. Emelinda Lopez, Rabies Focal Person at DA-BAI. This will provide a clearer picture of the disease situation and will support the channelling of resources for rabies prevention and control in greatly affected areas.
DA-BAI started its Rabies Awareness Month Kick-off Activity on March 2, 2015 with the theme: “Bakunadong Pusa’t Aso sa Rabis Protektado”, coinciding with the agency’s 85th Foundation Anniversary. Rabies Awareness Month, celebrated annually every March, aims to increase public awareness on the risks of rabies and the importance of having dogs and cats vaccinated regularly against this fatal disease.
The activity is in line with the BAI’s goal of accelerating the achievement of a rabies-free Philippines by 2016. One of its aims is to vaccinate at least 70% of the estimated dog population in the country or about seven million dogs yearly for the next two years.
This year’s campaign benefits from increased resources of Php 40 million for rabies prevention and control being implemented by the Bureau of Animal Industry (BAI) with support from the Department of Health (DOH) and foreign-assistance from the World Organisation for Animal Health (OIE) and the Australian Government. The OIE project aims to vaccinate 300,000 dogs annually in the Bicol Region and contribute to national rabies eradication efforts.
Local Government Units (LGUs) have been very active in conducting mass rabies vaccination and awareness campaigns nationwide.

(ecb/PIA7-Bohol)
