TAGBILARAN CITY, May 19, (PIA) –A dramatized documentary of a Boholano family’s struggle against poverty and crafting their own “life hacks” is slated for broadcast May 20, 2016 at Cebu Catholic Television Network (CCTN) channel 47 cable channel.
The docu-drama, as what the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) Social Marketing Team called, is a product of months upon months of hard labor, admits Information Officer Leah Quintana at the weekly Kapihan sa PIA and aired live over DyTR.
The docu-drama retells the story of the Torrentira Family, a beneficiary of the Pantawid Pamilyang Pilipino Program (4Ps) from Dagnawan, Sagbayan, Bohol, shared 4Ps information Officer Phoebe Jen Indino.
The Torrentiras: Peticio and Josefina were from Sagbayan and Carmen, who met when fate led them to Pantukan Davao del Norte.
After marrying in Carmen, both settled in their first year of marriage in Pantukan: Peticio was a miner who owned a few dredging machine and mining implements while Josefina run a local convenience store there.
While the family could earn between P10,000 to P15,000 on a good week, the entry of communist rebels who demanded tax from the mining company Peticio was working, slowed down the operations.
When the company refused to pay, the rebels burned the entire operation, and threatened, the family decided to leave Pantukan for good, bringing only a few savings.
Settling in Dagnawan, Sagbayan, the couple resorted back to farming and opened up a backyard farm which provided for their daily consumption.
From a meager backyard farm, the family also integrated ornamental plants and soon had an inventory of over a hundred kinds in its 1600 square meter property.
Getting himself elected as barangay kagawad and having been chosen to head the barangay agriculture committee, Peticio was sent to trainings in organic agriculture, which also pushed him and his family to put in a small poultry and livestock farm.
Slowly beginning to rise, the Torrentiras, who had already five kids: Jopether, Jinnefer, John, Jay and Jeneveve had also a fair share of trials.
Aside from starting anew after a life in Pantukan, the eldest son had reportedly a minor brain ailment, and a younger brother accidentally took the neuro medication he as taking.
Hospital bills and maintenance medicines for the two easily drained the family income that coming to college for the three elder siblings was next to impossible.
Compound the problem with the family getting a double whammy with the 2013 earthquake and the storm the followed and you have a ravaged farm, and an economically threatened family.
When the 4Ps however came, the constant Family Development Sessions bonded the family tighter, and cementing their resolve to help each other attain their dreams, DSWD said.
Despite all the odds, the Torrentiras now have a son in Dubai, although still groping to get a visa, a daughter working in her spare time but pursuing architecture at a state university here, while two more sons are taking up agriculture and agricultural management, all to helping in realizing their father’s dream of setting up a business viability of agriculture as a key.
The Torrentiras won the 2015 Huwarang Pamilyang Pilipino in the provincial levels, won in the regional levels and picked second runner up in the 2015 national level model family search from 4Ps beneficiary families.
Their story would be shown on CCTN, Channel 47 May 20 at 9:00 PM and a rerun on Saturday 21 at 7 PM. (rac/PIA-7/Bohol)
