WORLD-RENOWNED operatic tenor and philanthropist, Sal Malaki performs on July 3, 2014 at the Bohol Cultural Center with the special participation of the Bohol Master Singers, a choral ensemble- which will have its first year anniversary of its formation this July- which is composed of both professional(music degree holder) and amateur(non-music degee holder but musically capable) musicians in Bohol, initially gathered and formed by Ma’am Enriquieta Butalid and is currently under the direction of its conductor, Joshibiah de Juan, a Master degree-holder in choral conducting from UP Diliman and Korean National University of Arts, who is also the executive director and owner of the De Juan School of Music and the Arts Recreational Training; and will be accompanied by Mrs. Agape Labuntog, a native of Cagayan de Oro and a graduate from College of Performing Arts, Siliman University, major in Piano. This event is both presented to you by the De Juan School of Music and the Arts Recreational Training led by its president, Joshibiah de Juan and the Immaculate Heart of Mary Seminary under the leadership Rector Fr. Ramon Oncog.
Sal Malaki who was born in Leyte and studied at the University of the Philippines’ College of Music, major in Flute and Voice is the only Filipino member of two prominent ensembles in the US: the Los Angeles Master Chorale and the Los Angeles Opera. He sang with the Philippine Madrigal Singers in Manila before moving to California in the 1990s. As one of the most seasoned artists of the Los Angeles Opera Company, the United States’ 4th largest opera house, Sal Malaki was under the general direction of world-renowned tenor and conductor, Maestro Placido Domingo.
To Sal’s credit, he has performed in virtually every opera masterpiece in almost one hundred opera productions in his 17 consecutive seasons as part of the opera chorus.
He has performed solo roles in La Traviata, Madame Butterfly, La Bohème, Luisa Fernanda, Der Rosenkavalier, La Rondine and Fantastic Mr. Fox.
With the Los Angeles Master Chorale, now in his 20th season, under the baton of Maestro Grant Gershon, Sal Malaki was the tenor soloist in the world premiere of Jeremy Soule’s L’extase; in Bach’s Christmas Cantata Part I; and in Nielsen’s Hymnus Amoris with Maestro Paul Salamunovich in the latter’s farewell concert as music director of Los Angeles Master Chorale.
Here in the Philippines, Sal Malaki did a recording of Spoliarium, the operatic composition of Mr. Ryan Cayabyab and libretto of Ms. Fides Cuyugan-Asensio being the lead role as Juan Luna, telling the story of the hero’s love and life, and the world-class painting Spoliarium.,
As an artist, Sal Malaki is very much involved in philanthropic concerts with invitations from the Philippines, Australia, New Zealand, Singapore, Indonesia, and Thailand. He performed in Cebu last July 30, 2011 at the Pilgrim Center of the Basilica del Sto. Niño for six (6) beneficiary-groups.
Mr. Malaki has a Boholano blood of the Ampers from Anda, Bohol.

An innovative noting application that helps users share fun memories and experiences won the first place in the first ever Bohol Startup Weekend held in the University of Bohol in Tagbilaran City, Bohol.
The Flipnotes app, which bested eight other apps last weekend, allows users to create notes that have pictures in front with the text behind it and which can be flipped using a flip function.
The Bohol Startup Weekend last May 23 to 25 is a local leg of the Startup Weekend, a global movement of active technopreneurs learning the basics of founding startups and launching successful ventures.
“It’s basically a 54-hour gathering of tech developers, designers, marketers, and startup enthusiasts for the purpose of sharing innovative ideas, crafting new products, and launching startups,” said event organizer Benjamin Skelton.
The Bohol Startup Weekend was organized by TechTalks.ph, Department of Science and Technology-Information and Communication Technology Office, Bohol Information and Communication Technology Council, and the Bohol Provincial Government.
Beginning with open mic pitches on Friday, attendees bring their best ideas and inspire others to join their team. Over Saturday and Sunday teams focus on customer development, validating their ideas, and building a minimal viable product before demonstrating their prototypes on Sunday night.
The Flipnotes team was awarded a 3 month virtual incubation by CebuinIT, Geeks on a Beach ticket from TechTalks.ph, Freelancer membership, access to Auza.net OSX development facilities, an iPod from Airbnb, free massage, and Ideaspace mugs and shirts.
The second place went to RentMINE, an app which provides a venue for users who want to rent out their personal items for extra cash. RED App or the Ready for Emergency and Disaster mobile application won third place.
“The real winner is Bohol,” said DOST-ICTO Deputy Executive Director Mon Ibrahim. “The success of Bohol Startup Weekend is a great leap forward for the thriving of tech startups and the growth of the ICT industry in the regions,” said Ibrahim.
TechTalks.ph founder Tina Amper moreover said that the Bohol Startup Weekend helped broadened the horizon for technopreneurship in the country and push local innovative talents to the forefront.
The other Bohol Startup Weekend teams include Talk 2 Doc, an online appointment booking system for doctors; RState, an online marketplace for real estate properties; UNLOCKED Design Services;
#Rent, a private mailbox catering to young working professionals; iBuild, a search app for architectural and structural professionals; and Anda Concepts, a tourism portal dedicated to the Anda area.
The teams were judged by DOST-ICTO Deputy Executive Director Mon Ibrahim, Insights Consulting Owner David Aaron, Ideaspace Associate Director Dustin Masancay, Orange & Bronze Software Labs CEO Calen Legaspi, and Rhett Jones of Synacy.
The Gold sponsors are Ideaspace, Smart, University of Bohol, and Cebu Business Incubator for IT. The Silver sponsors are Dalareich, Islands group, Airbnb, Printbit, Freelancer, and PRworks Inc.while the Bronze sponsors are Live Lingua and Onmutu.

TAGBILARAN CITY, Bohol, April 08, 2014 (PIA)–Presidential Communications Operations Office (PCOO) Secretary Herminio “Sonny” Coloma Jr. will keynote the simple kickoff rites of the Bayani Challenge 2014 tomorrow, April 9.
In commemoration of the Araw ng Kagitingan tomorrow, Bohol will rise up to the call of heroism through volunteerism with the Bohol Bayani Challenge launch.
Gov. Edgar Chatto will lead the provincial, city and national government officials and staff, NGOs and civil society on the launching ceremonies at 4:00 p.m. at the CPG Sports Complex in Tagbilaran City.
This will be after the Bohol Bayani Challenge Walk wherein the different sectors will be mobilized at the grandstand from three starting points: in Plaza Rizal, F. Rocha Street and at the Tagbilaran City Pier, where they will have assembled at 3:00 p.m.
With the theme “Walang Iwanan,” this year’s Bayani Challenge will be gathering one million volunteers across 12 provinces — Aklan, Antique, Bohol, Capiz, Cebu, Eastern Samar, Iloilo, Leyte, Negros Occidental, Palawan, Samar, and Zamboanga — to rebuild homes and schools, plant trees, conduct clean-up drives and health missions, and invest time with kids for nine full weeks beginning April 12 and will culminate on June 12, Araw ng Kalayaan.
This is spearheaded by Pilipinas Natin, in partnership with Gawad Kalinga, the biggest bayanihan event the world has ever seen will have served 5 million families this year. (PIA7-Bohol/ECB)
