Flag Days launching set May 25

The National Flag Days which will be observed starting May 28 until June 12 will be launched nationwide on May 25, 2009.

It is in the national flag where Filipinos can derive their nationalism from a perspective on how richly blest the country is with natural resources and the sacrifices the heroes gave for the welfare of the generations of Filipinos.

Republic Act 8491 “the Flag and Heraldic Code of the Philippines”, states that “every year, from May 28 to June 12 (Independence Day), all offices and instrumentalities of government, business establishments, schools and private homes are enjoined to display the Philippine Flag throughout this period.” (PIA/ESS)

RP, Vietnam to strengthen security ties

Secretary Ronaldo Puno of the Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG) and Vietnamese Minister of Public Safety Le Hong Anh is set to hold exploratory talks in the area of transnational crimes.

The aforementioned officials will have talks focuses on reinforcing the ties between Manila and Hanoi, and in the fight against illegal drugs and international terrorism. They will also discuss the details of the implementation of certain aspects of the RP-Vietnam Action Plan for 2007-2010 that covers political, security and defense concerns and the Cooperation Agreement on the Prevention and Fight Against Criminal Activities (CAPFACA) between the two countries.

DILG Secretary Puno is in Vietnam May 10-15. This is upon the invitation of his counterpart, Vietnamese Minister of Public Safety Le Hong Anh. (PIA)

RP chairs ASEAN health ministers’ meeting on swine flu response

The Philippines will chair a health ministers’ meeting next week in Bangkok, Thailand. This will be attended by the the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) health ministers who will craft the region’s collective response to the H1N1 influenza A strain (A/H1N1) or the swine influenza virus (SIV). The ASEAN health ministers’ meeting will be held on May 8 (Friday).

The ASEAN’s “Plus Three” dialogue partners — China, Japan, and South Korea — have also been invited to the meeting.
The Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) said, “The Philippines, led by Health Secretary Francisco T. Duque III, will preside over the meeting as the current chair of the ASEAN Health Ministers Meeting framework.”

The DFA said that a Coordinating Center has been established by the ASEAN Secretariat “to monitor developments related to A/H1N1 in the region.” The center “is tasked to monitor and collate information on situational updates and precautionary measures taken by the ASEAN member states.”

While no swine flu cases have been reported in Southeast Asia, measures have been put in place in the 10 ASEAN member countries “such as screening of arrivals from affected countries using thermal scanners and health declaration forms,” according to the DFA. (PIA)

Pacquiao knock outs Hatton in the 2nd round

Manny “Pacman” Pacquiao once again made Filipinos proud. In his latest title fight, Pacman wins against Ricky Hatton.

Rarely moving and easy to figure out, Hatton was a steady target for Pacman’s right hooks and midbody punches. Pacman, with his left hand, KO’d Hatton unconscious in the second round. Referee Kenny Bayless took one look at Hatton and declared the fight over, thus ending the fight early.

The event brought a crowd of 16,262 at the MGM Grand arena.

With 6 World title belts under his name, Manny Pacquiao is the best pound-for-pound boxer in the world.

Leading exporters now eyeing local markets

According to the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI)- Bureau of Export Promotion, more than 100 exporters are participating in tiangge type exhibit. Dubbed the “Exporter’s Expo 2009”, it will be held at the Philippine Trade Trading Center (PTTC) from April 28 to April 30.

The export quality-products will include export quality products like jewelry, Christmas and holiday decors, fashion accessories, arts and crafts, furniture and garments.

DTI said manufacturers-exporters decided to sell their products locally, under marked down prices, after their buyers abroad cancelled their orders. (PIA)
