RP hosts East Asian Seas Congress 2009

The Philippines is host to the upcoming the East Asian Seas Congress 2009 on November 23-27, 2009 at the Philippine International Convention Center in Manila. The theme for the Congress will be: “Partnerships at Work: Local Implementation and Good Practices.”

The Congress is being organized by the Partnerships in Environmental Management for the Seas of East Asia (PEMSEA) and the Department of Environment and Natural Resources with the support of the Global Environment Facility, United Nations Development Programme, United Nations Office for Project Services and Coastal Management Center.

The East Asian Seas (EAS) Congress takes place every three years. It is a pioneering region-wide platform for knowledge sharing, capacity-building, strategic action, partnership building, and a forum for dialogues between policymakers, environmental and natural resource managers, business communities, academics, NGOs, local governments, and grassroots organizations. DENR celebrates Earth Day

Earth Day was celebrated yesterday with the theme, “Lupa at Tubig Buhayin, Hangin Linisin, Ang Batas Tuparin.”

Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) Sec. Lito Atienza says that the annual Earth Day celebration is a good opportunity to make a report to the people on current situation of our local environment, including the resources therein.

The celebration highlighted the current condition of the air, water and earth as well as the status of environmental law enforcements in the country.

Earth Day was started in the United States 39 years ago, when then Senator Nelson Gaylor called on the people to protest the degradation of the environment. (PIA-7/hfg)

1st Visayas Cooperative Teamshop opens

The 1st Visayas Cooperative Teamshop starts today until this Thursday (April 23) at the Tacloban City Convention Center. The teamshop’s activities revolve around the theme “One Visayas, One Coop Movement: Together, Everyone Achieves More.”

The Teamshop is hosted by the Regional Cooperative Development Council of Region 8 in close coordination with the Cooperative Development Authority and the City Government of Tacloban.

The teamshop will highlight the major role that cooperatives in the Visayas play in achieving economic development by improving global competitiveness under a regulated environment. Among the topics are Supervision and Regulation, Cooperative Justice System in Settling Disputes, Cooperative Taxation, Cooperative Development Council and Current Cooperative Programs.

The summit is participated in by the different cooperatives from Regions 6, 7 and 8. (PIA)

Palace ecstatic over boxing victories

Malacanang was happy over Filipino boxers Nonito Donaire Jr. and Brian Viloria won against their opponents yesterday at the Araneta Center.

Donaire, known as the Filipino Flash, successfully defended his International Boxing Federation (IBF)/International Boxing Organization (IBO) flyweight crown against his American opponent Raul “The Cobra” Martinez. Donaire dumped Martinez by way of stoppage in the fourth round of a scheduled 12 rounds.

Viloria, called the Hawaiian Punch, stood toe-to-toe against Ulises Solis of Mexico in a classic ring battle for the International Boxing Federation (IBF) light flyweight championship. (OPS)

CDC, PAF cited for continuing Roxas legacy

During the late President Manuel A. Roxas 61st death anniversary, representatives of the Roxas family cited the Clark Development Corporation (CDC) and the Philippine Air Force (PAF) for continuing the legacy of the late president.

In his welcome remarks, CDC President Benigno N. Ricafort said President Roxas would have been impressed with the developments achieved at the Clark Freeport. Ricafort added that “Clark has gone through a lot of major changes…And these changes were about, not by foreigners, but by the hands of Filipinos.” (CDC/PIA)
