DOH conducts nationwide simultaneous lighting of “Green Star of Life” lanterns

On April 24, 6:00 o’clock in the evening, the Department of Health (DOH) will conduct a nationwide simultaneous lighting of Green Star of Life lantern. This is in line with the observance of the World Health Day.

The Green Star of Life Lanterns will be lighted every night up to December 31, 2009. It will be displayed in a conspicuous area in front of DOH retained Metro Manila and regional hospitals and medical centers.

The Green Star of Life serves as an identity that symbolizes structural, non structural, and functional resilience in the perspective of healing, regeneration, life and growth in the hospital care facilities.

With the theme: “Safe Hospitals: Protect Health Facilities in Emergencies”, World Health Day 2009 focuses on the resilience and safety of health facilities and the readiness of health workers who treat those affected by emergencies. (PIA)

ASEAN+3 cements pact on $120-B emergency fund

ASEAN Plus Three has agreed in principle on how to reach the $120 Billion ASEAN emergency fund. This was agreed upon during 14th ASEAN Summit in Thailand. The emergency fund is intended to battle future financial crises.

The agreement was that – ten ASEAN member nations will contribute 20 percent of the total amount of the emergency fund while partners China, Korea and Japan will contribute the rest.

The launching of the emergency fund called ‘Chang Mai Initiative Multilateralization’, is set in the month of May.

The Chang Mai Initiative Multilateralization is a bilateral currency swap scheme set up after the 1997-1998 financial crisis. Under the new scheme, the swaps will be multilateral, making it easier for countries under stress to borrow emergency funds. (PIA)

Hi-tech, higher level of competition at 2009 Palarong Pambansa

The Palarong Pambansa is scheduled to open this April 26 to May 2, 2009. It promises a higher level of competition and full use of technology in delivering real-time games results to the spectators.

The venue for the palaro is the refurbished Leyte Sports Development Center (LSDC) in Tacloban City.

Some 15,000 athletes and school officials from 17 delegations representing public and private elementary and secondary schools all over the country will see action in the week-long sporting event. (DepEd)

PGMA launches joint government-youth project to protect ecosystem

President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo launched yesterday, at Bohol Wisdom School Gymnasium, the “Sama-sama Para sa Kalikasan”, a joint project between the government and the Sangguniang Kabataan. The project focuses on the urgent need to protect the ecosystem especially during the global crisis.

The launch of the aforementioned project highlighted the 3-day SK National Federation (SKNF) directorate meeting from March 31-April 2, celebrated here in Bohol.

Arroyo has signed the Executive Order 774 calling for drastic reduction of the country’s greenhouse gas emissions by 50% through massive tree planting, coastal clean-up and marine protection, garbage segregration, composting and the establishment of sufficient materials recovery facilities (MRF) nationwide.

The SKNF have responded to E.O 774 and has now planned 3 activities for this year: (1) National Simultaneous SK Tree Planting; (2) National Coastal Clean-up and Awareness Day; and (3) Production & Distribution of Education & communication materials.

Comelec urges Filipinos: Vote for Mother Earth

The Commission on Elections (Comelec) is urging the entire electorate to vote for Mother Earth. This is in line with the forthcoming Earth Hour on Saturday, March 28, from 8:30 to 9:30 in the evening. The “world’s first global election”, it asks to switch off all lights on the aforementioned date.

Comelec Spokesperson James Arthur Jimenez explained that everyone’s participation is part of the campaign against the growing threat of global warming.

Meanwhile, the Earth Hour news disclosed that over 74 countries and territories worldwide have signified their commitment to “VOTE EARTH” during the Earth Hour and that the number is growing by the day. (PIA)

LGUs, barangays enjoined to observe Earth Hour

All local government officials are expected to abide by the campaign to turn off lights of government establishments for one hour this coming Saturday (March 28) from 8:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. Though private individuals may not be compelled to do so.

The Earth Hour campaign encourages everyone to do the simple act of turning off lights on Saturday, March 28, for one hour from 8:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. “to raise awareness about the climate change.”
